Backyard chickens euthanized for bird flu

After four backyard chickens on-Island were confirmed positive, health officials euthanized their whole flock of 50 birds as a precautionary measure. The mass euthanasia took place at the end of last month, and the Martha's Vineyard Boards of Health announced the action on Thursday. The Edgartown health department did not release the address of the flock, nor which town it occurred in. Read more

High school sets 2025 graduation requirements

As students no longer need to pass the MCAS to get their high school diploma, local school leadership has proposed requirements for a small amount of students who are yet to meet their graduation goals. Those students will have to pass a number of English, math, and science classes in order to graduate. Read more

Feds want review of lightning strike

After lightning hit a Vineyard Wind turbine last week, the federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement is requiring the offshore wind company to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the incident and report back with findings. The federal officials are also saying that debris has not been produced from the incident. Read more

Showtime!

The West Tisbury School is opening its production of “Into the Woods Jr.” tonight. Middle schoolers in grades 5–8 are performing as all of your favorite fairytale characters, who learn that “happily ever after” isn’t always what we expect. Shows will run tonight, Friday and Saturday at 7 pm, with a Sunday matinee at 2 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, $20 for family.

Immigrant, lawyer

Marcelle De Sousa Alves arrived on Martha's Vineyard in 2005 from Minas Gerais, Brazil. And since she was six years old, she told The Times, she has wanted to become a lawyer. She's now living in Washington, D.C., completing legal studies through Purdue University's while interning in an immigration law department. The Times caught up with Alves to hear her story and what motivates her. Read more
