Edgartown development
A new development slated for Upper Main Street in Edgartown is in its preliminary stages, but project leaders hope that the over 60 apartment units it will contribute to the housing stock will make a dent in the Island’s housing problems. Read more about that here.
Tisbury teacher passes
This week, Shannon Carbon, a longtime Tisbury school ELL educator, passed away. Superintendent of M.V. Public Schools Richie Smith says that the district is coming together to provide counseling, and to care for students and staff after a tremendous loss. Read more about this here.

Pantry funding
The Trustees of Martha’s Vineyard Bank announced a round of grants for a number of local organizations and nonprofits. The big one was a million dollars that will go to the Island Food Pantry as they move into Oak Bluffs. The trustees held a ceremony this week, where they also announced funding a gift of $25,000 to Hospice & Palliative Care of Martha’s Vineyard. Read more here.

Today: The Oak Bluffs library screens a Scary Movie for fun tonight, a much-maligned Friday the 13th. When I was growing up, we called them "spooky movies." Either way, they both make me jump out of my skin. 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

The Milokan Cultural Center at Native Earth Teaching Farm hosts Rhythm of the Week tonight. Family friendly space for learning how to drum and for dancing. 6 pm. –C.B.

This weekend: On Saturday, my friend Valerie Sonnenthal hosts a virtual Peaked Hill Yoga session (it mentions the aging body, so I was interested) at 9 am. The Farmers Market is still going strong at the Ag Society. Come see me at the Island Autism stand, we’ll have eggs and flowers. 9 am to noon. Theresa Culletto of Vineyard Baker has her first cookbook, "Beautiful Bread: Create & Bake Artful Masterpieces for Any Occasion," and she’ll have samples for you at this event at the Farm Institute. 10 am. The Edgartown library has a limited supply of eclipse glasses available near the front desk for patrons of all ages to view Saturday’s Solar Eclipse. 10 am to 2 pm. Morning Glory hosts its annual Pumpkin Festival. I love this one. Free. 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. Collaborative College Essay Writing event happens at the Oak Bluffs library. Lucy Grinnan, professional writing tutor, is here to help. And there will be a pizza lunch. Bring a friend and whatever draft you have so far. 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Featherstone hosts a Sun and Fun exhibit, something that sounds pretty inviting on this chilly morning. Free. 12 to 4 pm. There’s a lovely exhibit by artist Adriana Eftimie at the M.V. Film Center. Also free. 1 to 3 pm. Paint a Wooden Fish at the West Tisbury library from 2 to 4 pm. Open Ice Skating for the public for one hour at the M.V. Ice Arena. 3:50 pm. The Women in Film Festival is taking place this weekend, and I meant to tell you to go see "Isle of Hope" Friday night at 7:30 pm because I wrote a review and I liked it. OK, I cried a little. And I received a lovely note from Mary Stuart Masterson about the film. "Good Egg" plays Saturday night. 7:30 pm. –C.B.

On Sunday, MVBLM hosts a silent reflection at Ocean Park. 9:30 am Lots to reflect on right now. Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation welcomes us to its First Annual Trail Run along the trails of Caroline Tuthill Preserve. There is no cost to register. 10 am to 12 pm. Open Mic from 11 am to 12 pm at Tisbury Waterworks, followed by live music from 12 to 4 pm, with Tristan Israel & Friends, Andy Herr & Friends, and Jam Shazam, original world music with Paul Thurlow and Nancy Jephcote. Admission is free, but donations help support a great local music venue on the Island. Meet Christie Scheele, landscape oil painter, 12 to 1:30 pm at Louisa Gould Gallery in Vineyard Haven. Make a Woven Wreath and decorate it with paper and wood flowers at the Vineyard Haven library.1 to 3 pm. MV CROP Hunger Walk gathers at 1:30 pm at St. Augustine’s Church in Vineyard Haven. Walk to the Lagoon Bridge and return. Visit the website in the listing to donate. Need a girls night out? Try the Ladies Only Psychic Party with Jon Stetson at the Film Center. 1 pm. I checked this morning and there were still tickets left for the "Billy Baloo" matinee at the M.V. Playhouse at 3 pm. Get tickets while you can. It’s lovely. I’m hoping to find a little peace and quiet this weekend. I love peace and quiet. –C.B.

Fossil Day 2023
Martha’s Vineyard’s National Fossil Day 2023 brought paleontologists, geologists, and citizen scientists to Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs for two afternoons the last weekend in September. Hundreds of people came. There were fossils inspired by the Misissipian-age shark skull, larger than Jaws, and other rare items. Find out more here.
