Island in a storm
Martha’s Vineyard continues to be in the national spotlight, even if most of the comments about the Venezuelan migrants and refugees are way off the mark. On Monday, a plane flew over the Island with a banner that called Islanders "hypocrites" and Vineyard businesses, including The Times, are getting calls asking why we "deported" them to Joint Base Cape Cod. Here’s that story. Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz is riling up the right with more than 60 tweets mentioning the Vineyard and, in one case, calling out county commissioner Keith Chatinover. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has that story.
Slam dunk
A dump truck carrying a heavy load lost its brakes on the steep grade from Main Street into Five Corners. The truck sideswiped vehicles on Beach Street and Beach Street Extension before driving into the water and making a turn to the right and coming to rest on shore. It was quite a terrifying scene for those who witnessed it and it was all caught on video, which is linked to this story by Rich Saltzberg.
Fish wish
Finn Sears has always wanted to catch a big fish, and this weekend he got a chance to live that dream through the Make A Wish Foundation and some special Vineyarders. Mike Cassidy and Debbie Grant, whose daughter had cancer in 2007, have always wanted to give back to the foundation that helped their daughter. They found a way through Finn’s wish. Freelance writer Abby Remer has the story.

Quote of the Day
"It was an exceptional honor to meet with President Biden on Friday to receive an update on the efforts the US government is making towards obtaining my brother Paul Whelan’s freedom from wrongful detention in Russia."
–Elizabeth Whelan, who along with the family of Brittany Griner, got a chance to hear developments firsthand from the president.

Hot Topic Comment
Jackie Mendez responded to multiple comments that seasonal homes should have been taken over to house the migrants and refugees. "I imagine Florida condos sit empty, too, when owners come to the Vineyard to visit—after they’ve sold their island house that they used to rent out for as much as possible, while they lived in the guest house on their property. Wealthy (and not that wealthy) capitalists do this all the time because this is America. Private property is still a thing here."

Hot Topic Letter
Marge and Jamie Harris wrote to say that Martha’s Vineyard made them proud in the response to migrants and refugees. "Once again, we're so impressed by our neighbors, the people of Martha's Vineyard, and their response to the recent dropping off of Venezuelans to our Island. What a sad statement for DeSantis and Abbot who prey on these people using them as ‘political pawns’ however, the people of MV responded with care and generosity and ‘just do it!’"
Today: Authors Michael Eric Dyson and Marc Favreau talk about their book "Unequal: A Story of America," a look at how racial inequality permeates U.S. society. Edgartown library. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

Get your dabbers ready, folks. It’s Bingo Night at the American Legion in Vineyard Haven. Doors open at 6, play starts at 6:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Remember Play-Doh? I loved that stuff, and I just found out that it was first marketed as a wallpaper cleaner in the 1930s. I’m sure it’s safe now. The Edgartown library hosts its Drop-in Play-Doh Group from 10:30 am to noon. –C.B.

On the grind
Brothers Joel and Alan Aronie are well-known on the Island as longtime inventors of everything from powered mortar guns for use on masonry joints, to a colorful toy that shoots rings of smoke. Now, the two Chilmarkers are working on fully patenting their latest creation — the Bud Wakker. The aptly-named product offers a whole new way to grind cannabis … with a pull cord. The Bud Wakker has already been distributed to Island Puff n’ Pass, and the brothers are working on getting it around to Vineyard cannabis dispensaries. Check out assistant features editor Lucas Thors’ piece on the unique invention.
