DA's suit against sheriff dismissed

One of the two clashes between our DA and Sheriff is over, for now. A Superior Court judge ruled that Dukes County and Barnstable County sheriffs did not have to comply with DA Robert Galibois' demands for 20 years of officer disciplinary records. The sheriffs can instead continue providing officer records when asked to do so on a case-by-base basis. Read more

332,000 forked over in scam

More details have emerged regarding the cyber scam that hit Oak Bluffs last month. Someone masqueraded as a representative of Affirmative Investments, a firm working with Island Housing Trust to develop affordable housing in the town, and swindled the town out of $332,000 in grant funding. Now, Oak Bluffs is planning to cover the lost payment through its stabilization fund, which will require a two-thirds majority vote at the special town meeting planned for next month. Read more

Composting goals

Island waste experts, haulers, and decision makers are planning a large-scale compost facility on Island after the closure of a food waste pilot program faced challenges with rodents, birds, and overdemand. The Martha’s Vineyard Organics Recovery Committee is exploring a site in Edgartown to process over 1,000 tons of food waste annually. With rising disposal costs and increasing regulations from the state, the project is essential to the Island’s waste management future. Read more
