Language access a rising challenge for courthouse

Edgartown District Court is grappling with a rising demand for interpreters as the local Brazilian population increases. There’s no full-time translator, while many non-English-speaking defendants struggle to navigate the specifics of the legal system, sometimes relying on friends or online tools. Judge Benjamin Barnes, who played a role in introducing “interpreter day,” says the service is a legal right, not a favor. Read more

Construction death an accident, D.A. says

The Cape and Islands District Attorney has preliminarily deemed that the fatal fall of 32-year-old construction worker Jose Luis Collaguazo Crespo was an accident, while the federal OSHA has joined in investigating the death. Edgartown officials say nothing was out of the ordinary during a recent visit to the Meshacket Commons construction site. Crespo seemed to have been employed by a Rhode Island-based contractor. Steamship dodges legal action from Falmouth

After removing a curb cut from town property without a permit amid their Woods Hole terminal rebuild, the Steamship Authority has escaped the threat of legal action from Falmouth officials. After meeting with the ferry line, the town is expected to install concrete barriers at a drop-off area at the terminal in order to protect pedestrians and bicycles.
