Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is National Snuggle a Chicken Day. We Islanders love a good snuggle with a chicken, and it’s been cold out there. They could use a little warmth. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Haag stepping down
The executive director of the Island Grown Initiative, Rebecca Haag, announced that she will be stepping down in the spring. Haag has been at the helm of the Island institution since 2016. The group has quadrupled in size since she came on board, and she says it’s been an honor to be in the position. Read that story here.

Rally at the rotary
Over a dozen concerned citizens rallied at the Oak Bluffs roundabout on the third anniversary of the attack on the Capitol, warning against Donald Trump and fascism. Attendees shared their concerns and hopes for the coming election, and for U.S. democracy. The rally was organized by Indivisible MV, a local chapter of a national political network, as a kickoff for its election-season events. Read more here.

'Big community effort'
The Aquinnah Town Center is one phase closer to completion. The first part of a playground designed by local children was constructed in November, and now the town Parks & Recreation committee wants to fundraise around $250,000 for phase two. This next phase will include pirate ship and submarine elements, xylophones, swings for toddlers, and more. At the town center, the Carl Widdiss Way Apartments are under construction, repairs are planned for the nearby basketball court, and a public foraging area is planned as well. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"I think we can be more transparent internally as a school system and school committee, [and] I think we can be more transparent externally with the rest of the community."
— Superintendent of schools Richie Smith following news that a demolition permit has been filed on the high school athletic field

Hot Topic Comment
"Steve delivered the Stoneham Independent? What a small world. My family published it, and helped me start The Grapevine, which preceded the MV Times."
— Nancy Dole on the new owner of the MV Times

Hot Topic Letter
From the MV Times archives from 15 years ago: "I would sincerely like to thank everyone who helped me the night of December 19, after I suffered a heart attack under the Christmas tree at my dear friend Jaime Hamlin’s annual holiday party. Thank you Jaime, Dr. Yukevich, Nina Thayer, and the Tisbury ambulance folks for getting me to the hospital."
— Robert Green writes to us on this day in 2009

Today: It’s Community Chess Night at MVRHS for all students and families. Everyone from beginners to experts are invited. I think I might actually be below the beginner category, if that’s possible. 4:30 to 6:30 pm. –Connie Berry

Island Community Chorus rehearses on Mondays at the Edgartown library, and new singers are welcome. I used to love chorus when I was in grade school, until they started weeding out the warblers and I missed the cut. It’s never too late. 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: I would try this: Forest Bathing at Polly Hill Arboretum. Relax in nature with an easy, mindful wintery walk. Easy would be the key word for me here. You should register though. 9 am. –C.B.

Movies! Check out what's playing at Island theaters here.

Sleep on it
"New king size Upholstered bed has tear in headboard upholstery on one edge, gray, cost $450, need $100, still in box. 508-663-7941."

An artist making time for everything
MV Times feature writer Allison Roberts is also an artist of many different kinds: From pens and watercolors to cameras and lenses. As she tells it, her parents were also encouraging art in Rochester, N.Y., where she grew up. She says that her home here on the Island is filled with artwork created by her family, and she can’t remember a time when she wasn’t drawing. Read that story here.
