The empreendedor

That’s the word for entrepreneur translated from Brazilian Portuguese, which Elio Silva embodies. Read the latest from our series focused on immigration from Brazilian to the Island. Our series began with the first immigrant from the country to work on the Vineyard; next came a particularly successful landscaper and how immigration shapes a region of Brazil, and last week, how families stay in touch. Officials say that it’s gotten so bad that the parasite is becoming immune to treatment, so much so that the Land Bank will be auctioning off their entire herd. Sadly, some will likely go to the butcher. Read more

Rock on appeal

A West Tisbury resident has been hosting a live music event on his property that has grown, to his neighbors' chagrin. The complaints reached the town’s zoning enforcer, and while the Radio Farm gatherings won a key appeal last night, he’s going to pump the brakes for now. Read more

Quote of the Day

“I feel like the complaints here are that the board is run by Suellen, and it’s ‘The Suellen Show.’ I feel that we have made decisions, and some people haven’t agreed and it hasn’t always been unanimous. But we do vote, and we have made those decisions.”

—Miles Brucculeri on the dispute still simmering in Chilmark
