Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1971, the unmanned Mariner 9 was launched into space on its way to explore Mars. The spacecraft entered orbit and circled the planet twice daily for about a year. Did anyone notice the strange haze the last couple of days here on the Vineyard? The hue made us think of Mars. It was actually smoke from wildfires in Canada, which you can read about in today’s Minute. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

A somber Memorial Day service
Islanders gathered on Memorial Day to commemorate service members and veterans who passed away. A parade took place and a call was made by the guest speaker for people to be worthy of the sacrifices made. Read more here. Meanwhile, the Tisbury School organized its annual March to the Sea in honor of those who gave their lives for the country prior to Memorial Day. See the photos here.
The turbines are coming
The Port of New Bedford welcomed a large ship from Portugal last week that was carrying the first sections of the offshore wind turbines that Vineyard Wind plans for waters 15 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard. Officials with the company say the plan is to construct the towering turbines in New Bedford before shipping them out to be installed later this summer. Read more here.

Smoke over the water
You may have noticed over the last couple days that the air is particularly heavy or smoky. That’s from smoke coming down from Canada due to wildfires. We talk with a meteorologist who explains a little of the science behind why our air quality is impacted, and how long it might last. Read more here.
MEETINGS

Quote of the Day
Kenny Givens, who served in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, was in town this weekend for the Memorial Day parade in Tisbury: "I lost a lot of buddies. Memorial Day is a special day."

Hot Topic Comment
Jessica Burnham comments on our story about passing-lane changes on the Island: "I don’t mind someone driving slow. The road is really hectic in summer. However, when all of the parking spots are taken and people are literally sitting, holding up traffic waiting for someone to pack up and leave their spot, I think it’s going to be a big problem. People sometimes sit for 10 minutes or more and if they cannot be passed it’s going to be very frustrating to say the least."

Hot Topic Letter
Don Keller writes to us about how he was almost run over by a bus while riding his bike, and why the response needs some attention: "The manager agreed that the bus clearly intruded well into the bike lane, but said that if I wanted to pass the bus, I should have been doing it like a car, and pass on the left side of the bus: That is on the centerline of Beach Road, in heavy traffic."
Today: I’m pretty sure I’ve never cooked with dried lemongrass before, but I’d like to. I’ve got a real love for lemons. Check out the virtual Spice Club at the Vineyard Haven library. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

I see once again I’m focusing on food. Big surprise. The Chilmark Community Church hosts Pizza Night — and it’s free. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: The West Tisbury library hosts an All-Ages Card Club. This means you can either learn how to play Go Fish or Canasta. My grandma taught me how to play Books and Runs and I still love it. 4 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
Many springs ago, West Tisbury town columnist Hermine Hull shared a recipe for Mediterranean Burgers and Tzatziki Sauce. If you prefer, plant-based ingredients can be substituted. Can you guess the fresh herb that is featured in both the seasoned patties and Greek topping?

If your family has a recipe to share, send it to us, along with a photo of the dish and a brief backstory if you have one, to recipes@mvtimes.com.

The flavors of the Vineyard
Martha’s Vineyard Museum is convening "Martha’s Vineyard Flavors: A Food History Symposium" at the end of this week. It’s a look at the roots and branches of Island food, from the farmers to the chefs. The symposium opens Friday with Dr. Jessica Harris, a scholar of the foodways of the African diaspora. The Netflix series "High on the Hog" is based on her book. Read more here.
