A contingent of Island officials were at the state house in Boston yesterday to testify in support of the Affordable Homes Act, including the sheriff, school, and health officials. A local real estate agent, running against the grain of some of the larger real-estate associations, called for the passage of sweeping legislation as well. Read that story here.
Tennis dispute
A dispute over the management of the tennis facilities in Chilmark broke out at a select board meeting this week, as petitioners are calling for a new committee to oversee management and to dedicate a fund to better maintenance. Petitioners say that operators are worried more about seasonal residents than locals. Read that story here.

Earlier this week, local animal control officers reported that they had worked to rescue a young seal that had been stranded in Edgartown Great Pond, likely after the first January storm. But this story doesn’t have a happy ending. Unfortunately, the newborn seal didn’t make it. Read that story here.

Quote of the Day
"Being diplomatic and maintaining that order is just not … the space where I am best in."
— Jefrey DuBard on being thrown into the chair position of the West Tisbury housing committee

Hot Topic Comment
"I can’t wait for the body cam footage to make it onto YouTube. Like, a MV version of ‘Cops.’ Especially on the 4th of July week. It could become a drinking game….every time some 19 year old with a white belt and a cooler full of white claws gets on tape saying ‘Do you know who my father is??’"
— Brian Mac comments on our coverage of Edgartown police pursuing body cameras for its officers

Hot Topic Letter
"As we shall see, the petition focuses on the constitutional issues, but ignores the political consequences of a decision to remove someone from the ballot. There is, in short, a grave distinction between politics, on the one hand, and constitutional principles, on the other."
— Columnist Jack Fruchtman adds to the debate over keeping Trump on or off the ballot

January seems like a good time for transformation. 2:30 pm. Family Center staff and other caregivers and their kids can head to the Ag Hall for Barn Buddies with bikes, trikes, scooters, and games for kids ages 18 months to 8 years. Drop-ins are welcome. Petey Berndt
Meet Charles Tallman
If you weren’t on the Island in the late 19th century, you may not have heard of local Oak Bluffs celebrity Charles Tallman. He was the sole survivor of the frigid wreck of the Christiana, after which he required amputation of all his fingers and feet. Due largely to the charity of fellow Vineyarders, Tallman ended up establishing himself as the owner of an octagonal shop in Cottage City (now O.B.). Read more about his life and times here.
