World-renowned windsurfer Nevin Sayre was rescued from drowning last week after an accident left him unconscious and face down in Sengekontacket Pond. Witnesses say the swift action of bystander Bear Harding very likely saved Sayre’s life. The close call is prompting discussions about the availability of safety equipment at Island waterfronts, and the need for first-aid education. Read more

Linda Coombs of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) wrote "Colonization and the Wampanoag Story" about American history from the perspective of New England indigenous nations. In Texas, a local committee caused public outcry recently when they reclassified the book as fiction in their public libraries. After a decision on Tuesday, he book has since been been labeled nonfiction. Read more

Vineyard Wind sent out a press release yesterday. At the end of it was a short mention that some blades would be removed from turbines in the lease area. After a fracture this summer, contractors used remote sensors to check blades, and while they have not released any details why, the latest announcement indicates that something may have been wrong with a few of them. The Martha’s Vineyard Commission decides this evening whether to take up the controversial project for a thorough review, in what some town officials say is the last chance to attract oversight.
