One of the most storied high school football rivalries in New England made its way to Boston on Tuesday as the Vineyarders and Nantucket Whalers arrived at Fenway Park for the 44th edition of the Island Cup — the 75th meeting in the two islands’ shared football history. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 pm. At about 3:30, the groundscrew cleared the tarp from the diamond, and it looks like they’re ready to play ball. We have a team of our own taking in the game and bringing you this report of bringing the trophy — won last year — up to the cathedral of Boston sports. Read more

“It’s pretty rich that our colleagues at the Nantucket Current wanted to bet Aunt Leah’s Fudge on this game,” said Times Publisher Charles Sennott of today’s newsroom wager. “And so, to further stir the pot, we decided to fudge this bet as well, and raise the stakes with our own Murdick’s Fudge of Martha’s Vineyard!” Read more

No environmental impact report for Trustees |
Beach access advocates celebrated a state ruling that the Trustees of Reservations’ appeal won’t need an environmental impact report, saving up to around a year’s worth of time. The nonprofit organization was fighting conditions that restricted how many oversand vehicles could be on its Chappaquiddick properties. The state review will continue under the eyes of the Department of Environmental Protection. Read more

Sailing without a contract |
A new contract for captains and pilots has still not been reached between the Steamship Authority and the labor union Teamsters Local 59. While the crew members are still sailing under the conditions of the old agreement, they are frustrated that the ferry service upper management doesn’t seem to be receptive to proposals of changing the work schedule. Negotiations are ongoing between the Steamship Authority and other unions as well. Read more |

"Fly Me to the Moon" shows tonight at the Vineyard Haven Public Library. It's a sharp and stylish dramedy set among preparations for NASA’s historic Apollo 11 moon landing. Sparks fly when marketing maven Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson), flown in for public relations, throws a wrench into launch director Cole Davis’s (Channing Tatum) already difficult mission. And when the White House decides they can't afford to fail, Jones is ordered to film a fake moon landing as a backup. Jim Rash of “Community” steals scenes too. It’s 6 pm, 200 Main Street, Vineyard Haven. Read more |
