The Dukes County Sheriff’s office records its booking room and overwrites those recordings, the sheriff’s legal counsel confirmed this week. The question had been key in a dispute between the Sheriff and District Attorney, whose office is now arguing that defendants in past cases should be notified of their right to apply for new trials. The Vineyard’s biomass stores over a million tons of carbon dioxide, according to maps from the Woodwell Climate Research Center. The maps tease a study scheduled for release this winter that will help decision-makers increase the Island’s ability to keep greenhouse gas out of the atmosphere, and adapt to the many challenges climate change poses. Crew on the Shenandoah in Vineyard Haven Harbor this week were in the rigging, helping to wrap up the tall ship's 61st season. The sails and rigging will be stored for the winter and the vessel will undergo annual maintenance. The Shenandoah is part of a nonprofit initiative to redevelop the Tisbury waterfront, called HarborWorks, which took a big step forward this past week. Read that story here. Read more

For 50-plus years, the late Rez Williams lived and worked as a painter on the Vineyard, an Island he loved and sometimes depicted in striking oil paintings. There will be a one-day retrospective of Williams’s work at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury. Tomorrow on Saturday, Sept 28, open to the public for viewing from 12 pm to 5:30 pm with a Memorial Gathering from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Read more
