Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
It’s Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) and for our Icelandic friends, Explosion Day — which pretty much means you eat until you feel like exploding. Oh, and it’s a Snow Day. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Stormy, snowy, windy
Tuesday’s nor’easter is bringing heavy winds, wet snow, and is keeping first responders busy. There have been reports of multiple vehicle accidents. National Weather Service has estimated that over 6 inches of snow have fallen in some areas of the Island. The storm has already canceled classes and many public buildings have closed. Senior housing in West Tisbury
West Tisbury is a step closer in getting additional housing for seniors on State Road. The project, being developed by Island Housing Trust, would provide housing for those 60 years and older. The developers had to make amendments to gain the approval, on top of a condition. Read more here.

Sewer main break
The Edgartown wastewater department reported a break in a sewer main earlier this winter that compromised the safety of the road and led to some foul odors. Now, the department is requesting nearly $5 million in funding to replace a mile of sewer piping. Meanwhile, they are looking for funding to start a much, much bigger project. Read that story here.

$4.3 million grant for wastewater upgrades

Hot Topic Letter
"It has recently come to my attention that a large group of people in the commonwealth of Massachusetts is being preyed upon. SMART Plan for Public Employees is a specialized retirement plan for part-time employees of public institutions. Employees in this category tend to be low-income retirees and other individuals who do not have the capability of working full-time."
— George Michaels writes to us about what he sees a predatory practice on public employees

Today: I typed these this morning with nary a snowflake in sight. The Mardi Gras celebration at the P.A. Club is canceled, which I find upsetting but understandable. Thankfully the fine folks at Mo’s Lunch are serving up po’ boys and muffuletta until 7:30 pm. –Connie Berry

The Writing Poetry event via Pathways has a Zoom option, so maybe that one could happen as well. I’ve got a lot of "what ifs" this morning folks. I hope it happens because author Tony Trigilio is expected to talk about writing as a craft. 7:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Valentine’s Day and the first day of Lent happening on the same day. Who’s in charge of the calendar this year? At least the team at the Oak Bluffs library is offering a daylong Valentine’s Day Card Making event. Who doesn’t love a homemade card? No one. 11 am to 4 pm. –C.B.
