Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama. This led to the bus boycott led by Martin Luther King, Jr. The efforts of civil rights leaders and activists led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but there are still people today fighting against injustices. Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust

Watch our film about repurposing a bed and breakfast and creating rental housing for hospital staff. Our hospital has 150 unfilled jobs. The lack of affordable housing is one of the big reasons. You can help solve our Island's year-round housing crisis by clicking here and donating now.
State House opening
Next year’s federal election got a little more interesting for the Vineyard. Representative Dylan Fernandes announced that he will be seeking a seat in the Massachusetts State Senate representing the Cape and Plymouth. That means the Vineyard — which shares a house district with parts of Falmouth and Nantucket — will have an opening for the term beginning in 2025.  Read more here.
Exploring universal preschool
The All-Island School Committee members recently supported plans for a universal preschool task force. The task force would include public and private preschool stakeholders. There are a few ways that universal preschool could be implemented, and universal preschool would benefit from modular units that the district has been considering buying. Read more here.

New Bedford to the Vineyard
A New Bedford shipper already offering barge services to Nantucket is looking to expand its services to the Vineyard. While the proposal was tabled as details are hashed out, the Steamship Authority expressed interest in the possibility of the service. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"Do they know they’re in Massachusetts?"
— West Tisbury Finance Committee member Kimberly Angell on a request to fly an anti-abortion flag on public property

Hot Topic Comment
"There are many other ways to offer discussion of controversial issues. Flying a non-governmental flag outside of a municipality is not the way."
— Rachel Baumrin comments on our coverage of a request to flay a pro-life flag on public property in West Tisbury

Hot Topic Letter
"Perhaps the Vineyard could arrange to fly unannounced shipments of them to Tallahassee, Fla., and Austin, Texas, to help them restock their flocks."
— Richard Chused of West Tisbury writes to us about about killing two big birds with one stone

Today: This is timely because I’m always down for dancing: Live Music Dance Party at S&S Kitchenette on Main Street in Vineyard Haven. Rose Guerin and Willy Mason, followed by DJ Pretty Ninja & Ty spinning vinyl records. There are refreshments involved. Doors open at 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

Looking for laughs? Try An Evening of Improv at Circuit Arts at the Grange Hall. This is on-the-spot stuff so it’s quick and clever — two admirable attributes. 7 pm. –C.B.
This weekend: The Miner Family Gallery hosts a Holiday Open Gallery event all day Saturday, beginning at 10 am. I haven’t been yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing the gallery. There’s a Wreath-Making Workshop at the Farm Institute, and you can also learn how to make eggnog. One of my favorites. 10 am. The Aquinnah Artisans Holiday Fair is going on Saturday and Sunday at Aquinnah Town Hall. Tons of crafted gifts and a craft table where you can make your own. 10 am to 4 pm. And man, oh man, am I interested in this one: Sabato Italiano Pop-up at the Larder. They had me at pull-apart garlic bread. 12 to 6 pm. See works in progress at 51Art on Beach Road extension. 12 to 4 pm. We’ve also got the annual Holiday Gift Show at Featherstone to visit. I always find something there (sometimes for myself). 12 to 4 pm. Freestyle Artistic Exploration is on the events list at the Red House peer recovery and support center. Bring an old project or start a new one. 2 pm. Authors Christy Cashman and Geraldine Brooks discuss Cashman’s newly released novel, "The Truth About Horses," at the West Tisbury library. All net proceeds from book sales will be donated to Misty Meadows Equine Center. This event is free and open to the public. Get there early for a meet-and-greet with Misty Meadows horses. 3:15 pm. I love the description of this one: "PathwaysARTS Music Series continues with an unplugged evening of acoustic performances with well-known local singer songwriters and musicians: Sean McMahon & Friends, accompanied by Ted McInnes, Isaac Taylor, and Siren Mayhew if you can find her a babysitter." Also Rock ‘n Roll Rick Padilla & Friends and more. We’re rooting for you, Siren. Doors open at 6:30 pm. The Island Community Chorus with director William Peek presents Sing We Joyous!, their holiday concert at the Old Whaling Church. Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 3 pm. –C.B.

On Sunday, check out the Dickens Christmas Village at the Carnegie in Edgartown. It’s free and amazing. 10 am to 4 pm. Gretchen Regan, master chef and caterer, leads volunteer sous chefs in creating a meal for Harbor Homes overnight shelter guests. Part of the Joyful Eating project at the Federated Church. Space is limited, so do try to register. 2:30 pm. Bring the young ones to the Ag Hall for Barn Buddies. They’ll enjoy fun indoor activities with bikes, trikes, scooters, and games. 3 pm. Join a hands-on Indigo Dyeing Workshop at Pathways, led by Rebecca Gilbert of Native Earth Teaching Farm. Pathways will have things to dye as part of the class, and you’re invited to bring small natural fiber items to dip in the indigo vat. 3:30 pm. Wrap up the weekend with a trip to the Gatchell Family Christmas Light Display on County Road in Oak Bluffs. Lights are on at 5 pm. Bring a nonperishable item for the Food Pantry. I’m not sure what I’ll do this weekend. Go out or dance in my kitchen. –C.B.

Staying in?
While weaving holiday stories from the "Vineyard Voices" books by Linsey Lee, Keya Guimarães shared recipes from local cookbooks that would make for great food gifts: Tea Lane Apple Chutney and Vanilla Marshmallow Nut Fudge. If you're feeling really adventurous, you could try the seasonal recipes mentioned that are from the Island of long ago, which have ingredients that are a bit unusual. We're plumb out of suet in the Times' kitchen, so we'll stick with the fudge.
