A consultant for the SSA shared with the ferry service’s officials that it is running on some outdated tech and needs to make improvements. In particular, changes need to be made for the reservation system, something that was implemented in 1997. Read more here.
West Tisbury's select board is skeptical that a pilot program for accessory dwelling units, rejected at last month's special town meeting, will succeed if voted on in April's annual town meeting. Affordable housing committee members want the article on the warrant, and they plan to hold  public meetings to better engage the public. They say the proposal would be a cost- and time-efficient solution to a major housing problem. Read more here.
Oysters on the beach
In this week’s fishing report, we go out on the frigid water for some oystering. Columnist Lisa Belcastro asks: have you ever eaten a raw oyster fresh out of the water, while you’re on the beach in winter? You should. The bass and bluefish may have gone to warmer waters, but there’s still plenty of bounty from the sea to enjoy. Give this column a read.

MEETINGS

The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank meets at 12 pm on Monday. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"It doesn’t look like we could escape any type of controversy by adopting anything else but this."
— West Tisbury Select Board member Skip Manter on the town’s new flag policy

Hot Topic Comment
"Armoring our coast, with massive rock revetments or even so-called ‘soft’ solutions, has so many negative consequences. Every alternative needs to be considered."
— Geraldine Brooks comments on our story about an erosion control measure worsening water quality in one Island great pond

Hot Topic Letter
"Is this Island Plan a conversation? I guess it is. It’s a conversation taking place on the deck of the Titanic, among first class passengers who are envisioning the business deals they’re going to make and the concerts they’re going to go to when they get to New York. How about that iceberg, people?"
— We revisit this letter from Susanna Sturgis from this time of year about a decade ago

Dovekies are in the air
You might be wondering, what’s a dovekie? Our Wild Side columnist writes about the football-looking bird in this edition. They have black-and-white plumage and they’re only about eight inches, which is amazing considering they spend most of their time in the middle of the North Atlantic. They are rare here, so they are a treat if you see them. Check out our story about them here.

We sent you The Minute because you gave us your email address at an Islanders Write or Islanders Read the Classics event (or at the Ag Fair), or you responded to an ad for The Minute and signed up on our website. The Minute will arrive Monday through Friday by the end of the workday, and features the day's news, important meetings and events, and even what to make for supper, along with some newsletter-only coupons and insider tips. We may produce special weekend editions and occasionally send you special offers from select advertisers. Got this forwarded from a friend? Sign up for yourself here. See past newsletters here.
