Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Charles Darwin set sail on the HMS Beagle on this day nearly 200 years ago. The journey would set the foundation for his theory on evolution. As you’ll find in today’s Minute, the MV Times is also setting off on a new journey, marking a new chapter in the company's history. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.
NOTE: This newsletter might be cut short by your email program. View it in full here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: M.V. Film Society

At home you are surrounded by life’s distractions, inclined to pick up the phone or do the dishes. Escape reality for a few hours with a screening at The Film Center.
Enjoy cinema snacks and relax in one of our reclining chairs in front of the big screen.
Simply sit and immerse yourself. You’ve earned it.

‘For this community’
The Martha’s Vineyard Times is changing hands. Peter and Barbara Oberfest announced at a Times staff meeting this week that they are selling the news organization to longtime Cronig’s Market owner, Steve Bernier. The sale is expected to be finalized this weekend. The Times also welcomes veteran journalist Charles Sennott, who will come on as acting publisher. Read some of the details here.
Post-storm trash
Islanders gathered at Squibnocket Beach in Chilmark to clear away the post-storm debris. Over 300 pounds of trash was sent to the dump. Another cleanup is scheduled for New Year's Day at Lobsterville Beach. Get the details here.

Christmas deliveries
M.V. Community Services advocate and a popular Island chef teamed up to deliver hot meals to nearly 300 local residents on Christmas. It was an impressive menu of eats. It was the first year under this new partnership, but a continuation of a holiday distribution program that’s been ongoing for years. We had a photographer on hand to capture the magic available here.
MEETINGS

No meetings for the holiday week.

Quote of the Day
"Our cows love a bit of singing before they are milked."
— Farmers at the Grey Barn, promoting their event,
Caroling for Cows

Hot Topic Comment
"Lawyering up is expensive. The SSA is incurring some hefty costs. Here’s a question the media hasn’t answered yet: Who is paying for the legal costs of those who are suing?"
— Thomas Hodgson comments on a judge
again rebuffing plaintiffs trying to get relief from the Steamship’s vaccination requirements

Hot Topic Letter
"What Judge Smith is actually saying is this: No matter how sensible it is for a municipality, such as Oak Bluffs, to regulate what is allowed to drain into its sole source aquifer, the Land Court is not the proper court for that interpretation of the law to occur."
— Brian Hughes writes to us in support of the Oak Bluffs planning board’s
appeal of a recent judge’s decision on the proposed high school turf field

Today: The Gatchell Holiday Display is something to behold. More than 20,000 lights along with snowmen, reindeer, and so many other things that I can’t even remember them. County Road in Oak Bluffs. Bring an item for the Food Pantry. Lights up after dark. –Connie Berry

The much-lauded "Titanic: The Musical" UK stage tour is captured for us in a screening at the Film Center. You’ll learn the hopes and dreams of the passengers in first, second, and third class. 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: All week long the Vineyard Haven library hosts Kids’ Holiday Break Movies and Crafts. It’s just another bonus from our fantastic Island library system. If I had young ones, I’d definitely take them up on it. 3 to 5 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
Warm up this winter with a hearty dish of Pasta with Lamb and Mushroom Ragu, one of the recipes in the Off Season issue of Edible Vineyard. If you simmer the sauce slowly, the flavors will infuse, so remember to stay on Island time for this one.

Do you have a recipe to share with the community? Send it to us, along with a photo of the dish and a brief backstory if you have one, to recipes@mvtimes.com.

Faces and places of 2023
We met some new people and enjoyed a variety of experiences this year, all by writing about our Island community. Here is a look at some of the profiles we’ve put together this year and community events that we’ve covered: from the winner of the Island’s spelling bee, to the state of shellfish on the Island, to a scout’s victory at the Pinewood Derby. Find these stories here.

We sent you The Minute because you gave us your email address at an Islanders Write or Islanders Read the Classics event (or at the Ag Fair), or you responded to an ad for The Minute and signed up on our website. The Minute will arrive Monday through Friday by the end of the workday, and features the day's news, important meetings and events, and even what to make for supper, along with some newsletter-only coupons and insider tips. We may produce special weekend editions and occasionally send you special offers from select advertisers. Got this forwarded from a friend? Sign up for yourself here. See past newsletters here.
