Right whale update
Officials with the New England Aquarium say that the North Atlantic right whale that washed ashore at Cow Bay was first entangled in fishing lines in Canada in 2022. The aquarium also says that efforts were made to disentangle the whale in 2023 off of Cape Cod. Meantime, the carcass has been taken to Wampanoag land. Read that story here.
Ice fishing
Our fishing columnist, Lisa Belcastro, brings us this story on how to fish during the winter, if there’s a solid freeze. Most importantly, she writes about safety measures and the tricks of the trade regarding what type of gear you’ll need. Read that story here.

Sign of The Times?
Our new publisher, Charles Sennott, officially started in his capacity last week, and right off the bat, he’s gotten his fair share of challenges: flooding, a broken server, and our sign nearly fell off in the spate of storms. Here’s his story looking into his motivations and what he hopes to accomplish with the MV Times.

— SSA board member James Malkin on the Steamship still probing web issues

Hot Topic Comment
"Bravo!"
— Caroline Derrig on the West Tisbury police officer of the year

Hot Topic Letter
"Our ways of building and remodeling are too destructive, and too out of sync with natural rhythms. We cut down, spray, burn, pave, etc., where once nature prevailed. We are the hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires, and executioners of the natural world — we inflict that loss on our wild neighbors in our sprawl."
— Susan Jones writes to us about clear cutting for a new nursing home facility

Today: This is on my to-do list: Friday Reset at the M.V. Museum with board games, crafts, puzzles, and a featured activity every week. They brought back PechaKucha, and they’ve had trivia nights, live music, and treats. You get the drift. Starts at 5 pm. –Connie Berry

The Film Center screens "The Zone of Interest." The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig "strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp." It’s based on a true story, which seems completely unhinged. 7:30 pm. –C.B.

Thanks to the Oak Bluffs library, we can attend an Artist Reception for Charly Palmer, a truly excellent artist. Part of their Black History Month celebration. 2 to 4 pm. To know Herb Foster was to love him. Join the Friends of the Edgartown Public Library on the anniversary of what would have been his 96th birthday to socialize, reminisce, celebrate, eat hot dogs, and donate to the Herb & Anita Foster Staff Education Fund. 4 to 6 pm. There’s another chance to party at Vineyard Montessori School’s Big Night Out. Dancing (with the Dukes of Circuit Ave.) and fun at the Grange Hall. Follow the directions for tickets. 6 to 9 pm. Man, there are so many dance activities this weekend. We Dance at Pathways continues with a special guest DJ spinning vinyl for another open-floor, open-house community dance party with DJ Benham Robinson. Dancing starts at 8 pm. –C.B.

On Sunday, the West Tisbury library offers a Winter Walk Scavenger Hunt for the kids. It’s free and open to everyone. 12 to 4 pm. Remembering Cape Poge
Chappaquiddick and its northern part, called Capoag, weren’t always one — Nearly 300 years ago, the two were completely separate, distinct islands. Cape Poge faced a long history of storms, terraforming, and flooding. Though today the Cape Poge jetties are still identifiable, the history of Capoag island remains widely unknown. Read the full history here.
