SSA crew shortages spike in 2024

Our reporting finds that crew shortages on Steamship Authority ferries in 2024 more than doubled from 2023, and that’s not counting cancellations that were planned ahead of the summer season due to a lack of crew. Public health issues don’t stay within language barriers. In the midst of COVID, public school staff started the Communication Ambassador Partnership of Martha's Vineyard, known as CAP. They’ve worked to distribute public health information in Brazilian Portuguese, and have trained 10 interpreters. Now they've expanded to match high schoolers with college- and career-planning mentors.
