Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1899, the first aspirin was patented, which has since become the most common household drug (not ironic that it’s a Wednesday, our deadline day). Interesting tidbit: aspirin was made from a chemical found in the bark of willow trees. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Hero at half-court
The Celtics honored Jennelle Gadowski of West Tisbury during a home game on Sunday. This is not Gadowski's first award for advocacy; she has been recognized before for her workshops for LGBTQ+ youth and for helping organize the Vineyard's first annual Pride Parade. Read about that here.
Fending off nitrogen
Nitrogen is one of the main contributors to pond degradation on Martha’s Vineyard, and towns are taking steps to remediate the harm. Some towns are pursuing comprehensive wastewater management plans, although expenses and implementation are factors that are still being considered. Upgrades may also be needed for some homeowners’ septic systems, and how that will be rolled out is another question. Read more here.

‘A tremendous season’
The boys' MVRHS basketball team were the last hope for the high school to bring back a state championship. But they came up just short in a tight game. Nevertheless, coach Mike Joyce said that it was a tremendous year: aside from breaking a single-game scoring record, they took home the season title for the Cape and Islands league. Read that story here.

Quote of the Day
"Too many, especially young people, renters, and families of color, are locked out of the opportunity to buy a home [...] Too many of us are unable to afford housing where we grew up. In a time and place of so much abundance, we are falling short of the sacred and achievable vision of our faiths."
— An excerpt from the letter signed by 150 Massachusetts religious leaders calling for affordable housing action last week

Hot Topic Comment
"It’s disappointing that the Steamship Authority has become unapologetically unreliable and is no longer trustworthy as the ‘lifeline’ to the islands."
— Sarah Toste on the Steamship Authority boat cancellations last weekend

"Using the knowledge that I have gained through my three years as President of the MV Beachgoers Access Group, I have contemplated the far-reaching consequences, not only for myself, but for the entire Island community, if public OSV access on Chappy were eliminated."

The Quilting Circle at the West Tisbury library gets together. What if you cleaned out drawers and closets and cut all your stuff you don’t wear anymore into nice, even squares and made something out of them? I think it’d be amazing. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Hey, Mom and Dad, there’s a Teen Mock Interview Event for jobs and scholarships at MVRHS after school. They’re serving pizza and your junior or senior can practice their interview skills. Remind them that they’ll have to take care of you someday. 2:15 pm. –C.B.
