Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
We’ve got some big birthdays today: the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, was born on this day in 1889, and we thank him kindly for his stylish shirts as well. It’s also Joseph McCarthy's birthday and we’re still wondering what we should thank him for. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

That was what Falmouth Steamship board representative Peter Jeffrey said he felt when he was informed of an internal investigation into what happened with the freight ferry Sankaty when it came off a Woods Hole slip in July. He says he didn’t hear it from the SSA administration but through a newspaper report. He now wants the Steamship board to meet in executive session to talk about the general manager’s contract, saying he has lost trust in his leadership. Read that story here.
Aquinnah's select board has raised its fee structure for all new construction in the town. The town will now charge $10 per $1,000 of building cost, up from the previous fee of 30 cents per square foot of construction. A waiver form will also be available for those who would have difficulty paying. This change is to address what town officials see as years of undercharging for Aquinnah's inspection, review and related services for construction projects. Read more here.
Student athletes at MVRHS will have an improved facility to train in, dubbed the "Vineyard Pride Building." The effort was spearheaded by the MV Touchdown Club, and support was given by Island businesses. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"Whether it’s two of us or a squad or a flight or a squadron or whatever your particular branch does, it’s always ‘us.’ And then we finish with our military career and it goes back to ‘me.’ And that is one of the greatest challenges — is when it’s ‘me’ that it becomes difficult. And part of healing becomes regaining that community."
— Retired Lieutenant Colonel Dave Berube on the difficulties of transitioning to civilian life.

Hot Topic Comment
"I think it’s wonderful…. all the naysayers: i bet you will shop there…. just be happy …. be happy for those that are happy."
— Dolores Borza comments on the new Stop & Shop expansion in Edgartown

Hot Topic Letter
"The current rule is that freight trucks longer than 40 feet will not be scheduled on the 5:30 am ferry from Woods Hole village. Could Vineyard leaders please request that SSA freight schedulers apply the same rule on the 5:30 am freight boat originating in Vineyard Haven?"
— Nat Trumbull wants fewer trucks on the roads in Woods Hole in the mornings

Today: Everyone has a story to tell and until you put that pen to paper, it stays stuck inside you. Let it out, baby. The Vineyard Haven library offers How to Write Your Mini Memoir with a Message online. Sounds like a great place to start. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

There’s a theme today. Bill Eville talks about his memoir "Washed Ashore" tonight at Pathways. See how I did that? I just finished reading it Sunday night and it’s one sweet read. It’s part of Ron Slate’s Writing and Poetry Series. Doors open at 7 pm, but it’s also happening online. –C.B.
Tomorrow: I’ve gotten to see some terrific art over the years, and I always enjoy Marston Clough’s work. It’s in an exhibit, "In My Mind’s Eye," at the artspace at the M.V. Playhouse. Drop by anytime between noon to 3 pm to check it out. –C.B.

Advice from our Visiting Vet
In our latest column, we are asked to consider that we are on a date with our dogs when we take them on a walk. That was a point made at a recent conference. Animal welfare is the quality of life as perceived by the animal itself. It’s not about what we humans think. It’s about what the dog thinks. If we want to understand dog behavior, we must learn about the natural behavior of the entire species. Read more here.
