Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
This day in 1964, the USSR launched Voskhod 1, the first spacecraft to carry a multi-person crew into orbit. It was also the first multi-day mission performed without space suits. The U.S. constantly trailed the USSR for first in the space race — including the Voskhod achievement. That would obviously change with the U.S.’s lunar program in the late 1960s. But still, we admire the gumption to go into space without a suit. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

The charge provides for up to 25 years in prison, up to five years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. Read more here.
A citizens petition is looking to potentially expand where marijuana establishments would be allowed in Oak Bluffs. Marijuana entrepreneur Geoff Rose was the one who initiated the effort. The petition still needs to undergo a public hearing process. Read more here.
The end of the 35-day Martha’s Vineyard Bass and Bluefish Derby is rapidly approaching. Saturday is the final day and the awards ceremony is set for Sunday. Our columnist Lisa Belcastro has the latest on who has been on the leaderboard. There’s been quite a bit of action, per usual in the final days, including a 15-and-a-half pound bluefish. Find out what people are catching here.

Waterfront House and Guesthouse, Chilmark Sponsored

Martha's Vineyard has many fine waterfront properties, but only a handful of exceptional ones. The Lee Family Compound is an exceptional, 3-acre waterfront property with breathtaking, unobstructed pond views from an elevated secure location, 750+ ft. of pond frontage, 48-ft. dock with separate mooring for easy access to Menemsha Pond and Vineyard Sound, and privacy without an abutter in view — all compliment the spacious, 5-bedroom, 5-bath, comfortable, well-built main house and the well-sited, 2-bedroom, 1-bath, contemporary guest house. The stunning views are everywhere, so 14 of the 16 rooms in both houses enjoy grand pond views. Because of the elevation, the sunsets, moonrises, and stargazing are some of the most remarkable the Island has to offer. The two-home compound can house 18 comfortably and is perfect for year-round family events. Come launch your canoe, kayak, or paddle board from spring to fall; swim, clam, or sail from a private sandy beach off the point all summer long; sunbathe on your private dock or on 3 decks or on the terraced lawn overhanging the cove; and enjoy seasonal holidays by a roaring fire with extended family and loved ones. This compound is proof that a picture is worth a 1,000 words (see Video Aerial Tour).
Quote of the Day
“The Island community has really come together in the past when the Jewish community has been grieving. I know they will on Friday as well. I think that’s a great comfort after these massacres.”
— Rabbi Caryn Broitman of the M.V. Hebrew Center during a prayer gathering concerning the war in Israel

Hot Topic Comment
“Good luck at the MVC. Can’t a local town handle something as routine as this? All the MVC does on these small projects is bring added cost to the owner and lawsuits that taxpayers must pay.”
— Mark Acker comments on our coverage of Island Grown Initiative going through the Martha’s Vineyard Commission to move the food pantry

Hot Topic Letter
“And so there is no misunderstanding, let’s be clear that, for many, barbecue isn’t limited to spring and summer months. For the aficionado, barbecue is truly the endless summer. The hardy griller can be found next to the barbecue in the dead of winter, in sub-freezing temperatures with snow on the ground, grilling away with a smile on his/her face.”
— Kevin Loughlin writes to us about grilling and the endless summer

Today: Circuit Arts at the Grange brings us the film “Past Lives,” a film festival fall favorite. Heard it was very good, so give it a try. 7 pm. –Connie Berry

I really have to think about doing this. I’m so behind with the nature stuff, and our climate change column is starting to get to me. Woody Filley speaks on How Your Food Waste Can Alleviate Hunger on Zoom via the Hebrew Center. Follow directions to get the link. 7:30 pm. –C.B.

Tomorrow: There is absolutely nothing clever to say about this. A community-wide Prayer Gathering for Israel and Peace takes place live at the Hebrew Center. If you can’t go in person, they have directions to attend via Zoom. 5:30 pm.

Staying in?
In an Edible Vineyard article about dining on the Island in the 1950s, Geoff Currier gives a recipe for Quahog Stuffies. It originated from the grandmother of Melinda Loberg, who says it is "intriguing on so many levels."

If you have a recipe for a main meal, side dish, snack, dessert, or beverage, we would love to share it with the community. Email it to

Life with a mission
Island chef and caterer Rachel Vaughn has been bringing relief to the people in Ukraine since war broke out in the region through the World Central Kitchen. Last March, she delivered more than 1,500 pounds of supplies on her own. On a forthcoming trip, Rachel will travel from Poland, bringing supplies as far as Bucha, where they will be distributed to units around Bakhmut. Read more about her work here.
