At a moment when many in the Brazilian community are worried about friends and neighbors — and possibly themselves — being deported under the new Trump administration, many are seeking solace in faith. Brazilian Pastor Renato Santos led a sermon this week that addressed this fear. Meanwhile, many in the Brazilian community on the Island and across Massachusetts stick to conservative beliefs and politicians that some say are contradictory to their interests. Those opinions could be changing. Read more
Meanwhile, in an update to our reporting from last week when false rumors of ICE raids led many to stay home from work, we hear from business leaders who worry about rumors persisting and their impact on the Island economy. Read that update here. |
A show of support at Five Corners |
Over twenty Islanders gathered on Wednesday to show support for vulnerable communities and protest President Trump’s recent executive orders, the second time in recent days at Five Corners. They braved cold weather to hand out Red Cards with “Know Your Rights” information for immigrant safety, chant that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) rights should be protected, and to hold signs detailing resistance to the current administration. Quote of the Day
|
“If someone has been here working for 10, 15, 20 years, if they have the right to buy a house, buy a car, or start a business, and they’re not falsifying anything to have these things, why don’t these people have the right to a work visa? Everyone would benefit from it.”
—Pastor Renato Santos on immigration policy |
