Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is National Boston Day, a day to not only celebrate the unique name, but also the capital city of our fair commonwealth, one of the oldest cities in the country. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Going hybrid
Many eco-friendly Islanders have called on the Steamship Authority to electrify its fleet to fight against climate change, and it seems the ferry service is taking a step in that direction. Among the various capital projects the SSA is working on, one of them is the design and engineering of a hybrid vessel. The new ferry won’t come cheap, though. Read more here.
Hoop dreams
While the Vineyarders didn’t come out on top against Nantucket, the experience of playing on the Celtics’ home court made it an exciting time. Plus, the game had a strong turnout with around 500 fans. Proceeds from the game supported the Andrew James Lawson Foundation. Read more here.

MLK Day Luncheon
The local chapter of the NAACP held its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day luncheon at the P.A. Club on Monday, the first time back in person in three years. A number of speakers talked about the importance of staying active and engaged in the fight for social justice. There were also discussions of local evidence of intolerance and hate here on the Island. Read that story here.

Quote of the Day
"They were eating it up. They were a little nervous at first. It’s a hard place to get going because of the space; it’s such a big arena. But it was a tremendous experience."
— MVRHS basketball coach Mike Joyce on the trip up to TD Garden in Boston

Hot Topic Comment
"One man’s ‘banner’ is another man’s bummer. ‘Record Year’ might have been a more unbiased headline, since islanders have mixed feelings about the growing number of airborne arrivals."
— Geraldine Brooks comments on our
coverage of a high number of passengers flying into the Vineyard airport last year

Hot Topic Letter
"Our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude for the beautiful memorial celebration you helped create for Ed on December 28th. We were blown away by the huge turnout, the fantastic music by ESP and the spread of delicious food."
— Shirley, Lindsay, and Tom Medeiros, and Amy Custer,
on thanking the P.A. Club

Today:
Sherry Sidoti talks about her book "A Smoke and a Song" in person and on Zoom via the Vineyard Haven library. It’s gotten great reviews and is on my waiting-to-read-in-February list. 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

Pathways at the Chilmark Tavern hosts Open Floor Readings, curated by Ron Slate, in person and on Zoom. Maybe this is your chance to share your own memoir with a group. Doors open at 7 pm, it starts at 7:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: The Rotary Club meets at the P.A. Club. The meetings are free and open to everyone. It’s a great organization that accomplishes a lot on the Island, and it’s a great way to meet folks and network a bit. And Mo’s Lunch is right there. 12:10 pm.

Art and history
The Vineyard Haven Harbor Cultural District is one of the largest cultural districts in the state and is the only one to include a harbor. Officials representing the area are now trying to encourage its walkability. At a recent public forum, the group discussed new regulations, the pros and cons of public murals, and other ideas. Read that story here.
