The Vineyard's top stories of 2024 |
 |
Here are just some memorable front pages from a busy 2024 on Martha's Vineyard. Islanders this year contended with side effects of offshore wind development, picking up pieces of a broken turbine from their beaches this summer and raising new alarms about workforce housing in Vineyard Haven. Hidden homelessness also rose to the forefront, as our coverage of homelessness in the State Forest predated state officials clearing encampments. And Islanders and commuters both spoke their minds to the Steamship Authority throughout the year, which saw SSA head Bob Davis announcing his resignation amid trip cancellations, crew shortages and maintenance issues. Our spotlight on Vineyard volunteers continues with Sarah Sylvia, a full-time nurse at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital. Sylvia takes one day off per week from her job to help out at Harbor Homes, and she talked to The Times about why she makes sure to get to know those she supports at the shelter. “People get lost — nobody sees them,” she told The Times. “It’s not just here on the Vineyard, it’s everywhere. And it’s really reached a critical threshold since the pandemic.” Read more

Senior volunteers provided $40 million worth of help |
As you read our profiles of volunteers, you'll be interested in Karen Tewhey's essay about the rising number of seniors volunteering their time on the Vineyard. In 2015, according to Healthy Aging of Martha's Vineyard, around 40 percent of those aged 65 and up volunteered. But by 2020, that had risen to nearly 55 percent, amounting to an estimated $42 million in labor in 2021. At the same time, some Vineyard officials are looking for more young Vineyarders to join town committees. Read more

The late Ron Rappaport could often be seen on the Island's roads and bike paths, standing out with his Einstein-like hair under a helmet. In 2020, Rappaport answered a call from the Red Stocking Fund, helping to raise over $100,000 for Island children's holiday presents, clothes, and food.
This year, in Rappaport's memory, an anomymous donor contributed 49 extra bikes to the fund, along with help from local businesses, ensuring that every child who asked for a bike this holiday season got their wish. Read more |

Quote of the Day |
“There’s a voracious cycle of needing, and wanting, and not having — because it’s not available. [But] there are a lot of people who have seen the darkness, and that’s why they’re helping others.”
—Harbor Homes volunteer Sarah Sylvia on the on-Island support for the homeless |
