Revisit more of the Island's biggest stories of 2024 with our year-end list. The Vineyard saw a feat of heroism in October as bystander Robert Harding pulled hall-of-fame windsurfer Nevin Sayre out of Sengekontacket. The Vineyard has seen the last of Beach Road Weekend Music Festival, as founder Adam Epstein cited financial deficits and supply chain issues. Islanders also mourned the loss of beloved local figures this year, including prominent attorney Ron Rappaport, who died unexpectedly this summer. Read more |

Vineyard Lands for Our Community has raised $5.5 million so far toward its HarborWorks project to remake Vineyard Haven's waterfront. Next steps, the nonprofit says, are to raise over $1 million to pay for permitting. "Our hope is that in years to come, sea-worn tugboats and gleaming ferries will tie up alongside classic schooners and locally built wooden boats, while its shores become a destination for artists, artisans, visitors and Island residents alike," VLC writes in this essay. Ulrike Wartner has had an active retirement as a volunteer in three Island organizations. She serves on the ethics board at Hospice at Martha's Vineyard, as a shorebird monitor at BiodiversityWorks, and a harvester at Island Grown Initiative. Her busiest times of year are the summer and fall, when she tracks the well-being of the Vineyard shorebirds. She says volunteering can be a healthy mix of doing what you like while making life easier for others. Read more

Courtney Daly graduated from the Vineyard's high school in 2000, and in a matter of years had her eyes on a job in behavioral health. But then COVID came and she was laid off. Like many Vineyarders, she headed home to wait out lockdown. She wasn't looking for a career change, but nine months into the pandemic she found a job at Adult and Community Education Martha's Vineyard, which she says changed her life. Read more
