Vineyard veterans funding could be saved

Sen. Elizabeth Warren announced her plans to file an amendment against a tax break and spending cuts bill introduced by Senate Republicans, and reinstatement of the Martha's Vineyard Community Services is on the table. This follows the Department of Veterans Affairs deciding not to renew its contract with the Island nonprofit's Readjustment Counseling for War Veterans program. Still, Islanders have already begun to donate to support their veterans. Read more

Challengers take on Edgartown incumbent

Mike Donaroma has served for more than a decade on the Edgartown select board and he is facing two new challengers, both with extensive resumes in town committees — Alex Morrison and Glen Searle. The three candidates answered our questions as we look to the annual election held on Thursday next week. Read more

Pond vs. Brook


In our ongoing coverage in advance of town meeting next week, West Tisbury will review a number of requests including a leaf-blower bylaw and an override to fund its budget. But potentially drawing the most debate on town meeting floor will be a citizen’s petition article to create a committee to study Mill Pond — which is an effort to preserve the water body instead of returning it to the natural brook that originally traveled through town. Back in court

After serving over a decade in prison for a rape conviction, David Thrift sought a bail reduction from $950 to $300 in the Edgartown District Court for an assault with a weapon charge that occurred on Island last month. The commonwealth opposed, referencing his post-release crimes. Judge Raffi N. Yessayan approved the Commonwealth’s request to raise bail instead to $1,500. Thrift remains in Dukes County Jail, unable to post bail as of Friday morning. Read more

Ralliers to gather on Saturday

Rallies and protests are planned across the country tomorrow in what is being billed as “Hands Off!” — a response to Elon Musk and the Trump administration making cuts to services. Organizers on the Vineyard are expecting more than 100 people to gather at Five Corners and some Islanders have coordinated travel to a rally planned in Boston.

A vision of inclusion and service

The Rev. Oscar Denniston, an immigrant from Jamaica in 1901, helped create a faith-based community that touched the lives of many, many Islanders beginning in the early 20th century. The Dennistons came with a vision of inclusion and service through their home in Oak Bluffs. The Martha’s Vineyard Museum has a new exhibit dedicated to the family. Read more

The Martha’s Vineyard Figure Skating 36th annual ice show: Nature’s Symphony is being held at the Martha’s Vineyard Ice Arena, from 6 to 8pm tonight. Entry for adults is $10, seniors and students are $5 and the Family Rate is $25.  Read more

The Vineyard Haven Library is preparing for the big, temporary move and will be giving away craft supplies from 10 am until 4 pm on Saturday. Both kids and adults are welcome to come and take what they need, first come first serve. Read more

Sunday

On Sunday, poetry Laureate Claudie Taylor will be hosting a relaxing poetry reading at West Tisbury Library, starting at 2:30 pm. Members will read their own poems as well as the poems of others, all are welcome to attend as readers or listeners. Numbers will be drawn from a hat to determine the reading order. No sign up needed to participate. Read more
