Steamship proposes rate hikes

The Steamship is proposing significant rate increases in which vehicle reservations could jump $11 in some instances and passengers could pay an additional dollar. This comes from the SSA looking to fund a potential $15.2 million budget increase from last year. Public budget workshops are upcoming. Read more


Five Corners fix on hold, balloons in cost

We all know the woes experienced during storms along the pivotal Island intersection. The town and state have been trying to come up with a solution. What officials hoped would be a partial fix before the winter will be more expensive than anticipated, and getting completed by the winter seems to be in question. Read more


ICE makes more Island arrests

Federal immigration officials announced yesterday that two fugitives from out of the country were arrested on-Island in September. The details of their arrests are still limited, but the charges reported included crimes against humanity and illegal trafficking as well as international drug trafficking. Read more


State forest mismanagement concerns

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation has come under scrutiny recently for not adequately addressing management concerns at the State Forest amid concerns about a heightened risk of wildfire. Also concerning is a lack of staff on Island and maintenance of bike trails through the forest. Now, the department’s top official will be coming to the Island to answer concerns. Read more
