State forest plan faces growing pushback

The state has reinvigorated plans originally considered two decades ago to clear cut tens of acres of white pine in the state forest. But there has been growing opposition on the Island, including a prominent elder in the Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah. Opponents say that we should allow nature to take its course, and that the state is pursuing the creation of a landscape similar to after Europeans settled the area. Advocates are hopeful that the state is taking a charge and pursuing maintenance in the forest that some have argued has been neglected. Read more

Farewell, Katama and Gay Head

The Steamship Authority finalized the sale of two freight ferries this month, netting a collective $250,000. The Katama and the Gay Head will now be owned by the Robert B. Our company in Harwich, although how they’ll be used by their new owner is uncertain. The vessels will be replaced by a new set of sister freight ferries, one of which has already been ceremoniously commissioned. Read more

Vineyard swim splits Nantucket meet

The Martha’s Vineyard varsity swim team made the trek over to Nantucket last Saturday. Despite the extra winter challenge of needing to take two ferries each way to make it to the meet, the Vinyard squad performed well. The boys team won 76-69, and the girls lost 99-57. A few Island swimmers hit personal records and Ronan Mullin qualified for the South Section State Championship in the 100m Freestyle. Read more
