Please join us for the launch of the MVC’s Housing Action Task Force
Thursday, May 11, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. on Zoom
An island-wide effort to engage the entire community to work together in pursuit of housing solutions: All are welcome. The housing crisis impacts the entire community: it will take a community-wide conversation to address it.
The MVC has been working steadily over the years with the Towns’ Housing Committees and Island housing advocates via the Joint Affordable Housing Group. The Housing Action Task Force will build on the important work of that group.
About the MVC’s planning capacity:
As the Island’s Regional Planning Agency (RPA), the MVC is one of 13 state agencies comprising the Massachusetts Association of Regional Planning Agencies https://massmarpa.org/who-we-are/ As such, the MVC has a unique ability to engage with and marshal planning resources and strategies from across the Commonwealth, the US, and abroad. We engage with local, state, and federal entities to analyze our local challenges, develop policy solutions, and pursue funding for implementation.
We are committed to using these resources and our mandate as a state RPA to support the six towns, and the Island community as a whole, in developing thoughtful, viable, and sustainable long-term solutions to our housing crisis.
We hope you will join us for our first meeting where we will set priorities and outline areas of focus for the road ahead:
- Engage stakeholders to set goals.
- Develop a roadmap for communication and public education.
- Stabilize existing year-round residents and preserve year-round housing inventory.
- Explore and pursue sustainable seasonal workforce housing solutions.
- Zoning inventory/analysis; strategies for zoning updates to support stable housing.
- Understand the carrying capacity of our infrastructure and natural environment.
- Wastewater and solid waste solutions.
- Economic impacts of year-round housing vs the cost of doing nothing.
- Opportunities for public-private partnership.
- State legislative landscape re: housing; how to engage at state level as a community.
- Impacts of market demand on housing costs.
- Explore/develop financial products and programs for housing accessibility: closing cost assistance, down payment assistance, ADU incentive programs, rental assistance, etc.
