Out with the old Monday morning was crunch day for the old Chilmark Fire Station. An excavator made fairly quick work of the old building to make way for a fire station and ambulance building. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the story, photos, and a video. Meanwhile, voters on Saturday went to town meeting and agreed to spend an additional $1.3 million on the new buildings after bids came in higher than anticipated. Rich also has that update.
COVID update For the second week in a row, the Island’s number of COVID-19 positive results remained steady at 58. The majority of the positive test results were over-the-counter tests, which don’t calculate into the community’s risk for spreading the virus under the CDC’s metrics. Editor George Brennan has this update.
Plane view A military plane that made a stop at Martha’s Vineyard Airport on Friday is under investigation by the U.S. Air Force Reserves. The plane stopped, scooped up a motorcycle, and took off from the airport while onlookers watched. The plane is part of a weather reconnaissance unit out of Mississippi. Reporter Rich Saltzberg and editor George Brennan have teamed up to try to solve this mystery.

Hot Topic Letter Mary-Jean Miner offered a counterpoint to another letter writer’s view on the term washashore. "Thirty years ago I washed ashore on the Vineyard and I’m rather proud to be a wash-ashore. I even had six T-shirts made for me and my friends, some of whom have spent every summer of their lives here before retiring as year-rounders."

It seems if the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) ever gets its electronic Bingo
facility up and running, it won’t be a first for gambling on the Island. "Gambling — mostly illegal — has been present on the Island in one form or another for centuries," wrote Chris Baer in his most recent This Was Then. "Although it was banned by the early Colonial government, historian Charles Banks found hints of card playing among the early settlers."
