Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1979, the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island occurred. Today is National Something on a Stick Day. What’s your favorite food to eat on a stick — a corn dog, teriyaki beef, or a kabob? We’re partial to Popsicles. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust

With IHT’s help a year-round homeowner downsized and stayed on the Island and two Vineyard families purchased year-round affordable homes. Watch to see how we did it! You can help build more urgently needed affordable housing on Martha’s Vineyard. Click here to donate now.
Out with the old
Monday morning was crunch day for the old Chilmark Fire Station. An excavator made fairly quick work of the old building to make way for a fire station and ambulance building. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the story, photos, and a video. Meanwhile, voters on Saturday went to town meeting and agreed to spend an additional $1.3 million on the new buildings after bids came in higher than anticipated. Rich also has that update.
COVID update
For the second week in a row, the Island’s number of COVID-19 positive results remained steady at 58. The majority of the positive test results were over-the-counter tests, which don’t calculate into the community’s risk for spreading the virus under the CDC’s metrics. Editor George Brennan has this update.
Plane view
A military plane that made a stop at Martha’s Vineyard Airport on Friday is under investigation by the U.S. Air Force Reserves. The plane stopped, scooped up a motorcycle, and took off from the airport while onlookers watched. The plane is part of a weather reconnaissance unit out of Mississippi. Reporter Rich Saltzberg and editor George Brennan have teamed up to try to solve this mystery.
MEETINGS
The Edgartown select board meets at 4 pm Tuesday. Remote access. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"I practiced a lot, like every day. I will be very happy if I win today because I worked really hard."–Kalleb Oliveira, a fifth grader at Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School, ahead of Friday’s Islandwide spelling bee

Hot Topic Comment
Richard Limber commented on a story about his painting of a Ukrainian girl. "Are there any artists who would be interested in participating in a possible art show that would be oriented conceptually with the plight of Ukraine?"

Hot Topic Letter
Mary-Jean Miner offered a counterpoint to another letter writer’s view on the term washashore. "Thirty years ago I washed ashore on the Vineyard and I’m rather proud to be a wash-ashore. I even had six T-shirts made for me and my friends, some of whom have spent every summer of their lives here before retiring as year-rounders."
Today: I love old movies. The M.V. Playhouse hosts Monday Night at the Movies with "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." I am very old. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

And it’s Bingo night. It really doesn’t get any better. American Legion Hall, doors open at 6 pm and play starts at 6:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Bring the kids to the Edgartown library for Drop-in Paint Group. Everything is supplied, you just bring your talented offspring in to see what they can create. 10:30 am to noon.

Staying in?
Sometimes it’s better to ease into cooking during the work week. Take reader Ione Bissonnette’s advice and try this one-pot meal tonight: Mushroom Ravioli with Mushrooms, Zucchini, and Turkey Kielbasa. We love it when everything comes together in one pan.

Bet on it
It seems if the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) ever gets its electronic Bingo facility up and running, it won’t be a first for gambling on the Island. "Gambling — mostly illegal — has been present on the Island in one form or another for centuries," wrote Chris Baer in his most recent This Was Then. "Although it was banned by the early Colonial government, historian Charles Banks found hints of card playing among the early settlers." You can read more about the Island’s history with gambling here.
