Today is National Library

Barging past M.V. A barge company is requesting to ship freight to an Island, but it’s not Martha’s Vineyard. In order to fix an issue with UPS failing to get Steamship Authority reservations for Nantucket, a company is looking to be licensed to ship freight from New Bedford to the other island. The issue went before the port council today and is headed for the SSA board later this month. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the details.
Budget recertified At a meeting on Monday, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional School Committee recertified its budget after getting exact amounts of excess and deficiency funds from the state. Meanwhile, some board members expressed concern that they weren’t consulted before a statement was sent to the newspaper about an incident that occurred during a planning board meeting last week. Reporter Lucas Thors has this update.
Clear cut The clear-cutting of bramble near a wetland in Chilmark provided a clear-cut decision by the conservation commission. The vegetation needs to be restored on the property and a trench that was dug needs to be filled in. The property owner was apologetic during a meeting Tuesday morning, but nonetheless is likely to face fines for the illegal work. Editor George Brennan has the story.

Hot Topic Letter Allan Dutton wonders if empty school buildings could be part of the the solution to the Island’s workforce housing problems. "The housing problem for workers is urgent. The towns need to act soon. The quality of life here will certainly go down without needed summer (and year-round) workers."

A historical count If you think it’s boring and slow here during the winter now, just take a look back to April, 1950, when 5,557 residents were counted in total on the Island as part of an annual census. At 53 residents per square mile, it was the commonwealth’s least densely populated county. This Was Then columnist Chris Baer tells us the story of seven dedicated enumerators that scoured the Vineyard to determine just how many (and who) lived here way back then.
