Kristal’s out Jeff Kristal won’t be seeking reelection to the Tisbury select board. The nomination period came and went with Kristal not applying to have his name on the ballot. The select board member has been called a bully for his role in attempting to get a police officer to target a business owner with traffic tickets. And that wasn’t his only alleged transgression. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the story, including some comments from the man who will likely replace Kristal.

Season’s greetings
Town meeting season, that is. Four towns will gather next Tuesday night for annual and special town meetings — Tisbury, Oak Bluffs, West Tisbury, and Edgartown. All of the towns will be voting on the housing bank legislation, but each has its own unique warrant with other town issues, like revamping human resources in Tisbury, upgrading a wastewater treatment plant in O.B., limiting house sizes in W.T., and developing a wastewater management plan in Edgartown.

Ban-wagon The county commission is talking about getting on the moped ban-wagon. At a meeting on Wednesday, the commissioners discussed the Oak Bluffs legislation that we wrote about earlier this week. The commissioners would like an Islandwide ban on moped rentals citing the safety concerns. Meanwhile, another commissioner thinks that e-bikes should be next on the list. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this story.

"I am a retired educator and I taught over 27 years at MVRHS. Every kid that came into my classroom was an individual who needed to learn and I had to find a myriad of ways to teach so that everyone one of them would have success in their learning. Yes, that is the commitment of teaching and most times we meet that challenge, but not always. However, when we fall short, we keep on trying! Teaching, to me, is a powerful profession because it is so challenging and at times overwhelming to know that we, teachers, truly make a difference in kids’ lives!" Hot Topic Letter Suzanne Robotti wrote to condemn the comment made by Terry Donahue at a recent meeting of the Oak Bluffs planning board. "Susan Desmarais bravely came to the meeting with factual and important information. We are proud that Ms. Desmarais is a member of DES Action USA, and we stand beside her in educating people about DES and endocrine disruptors — which synthetic turf with PFAS and DES both are. To attempt to silence this woman by insulting her story and gender is disgusting."

Today: There is a presentation on Protecting Girls of Color from the School-to-Prison Pipeline via the Vineyard Haven library. A Mass. report was recently released showing that girls of color were more likely to receive exclusionary discipline compared to white schoolmates. Info says this event is appropriate for girls from 7th grade up. 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry
Women in Jazz: History and Live Performance happens virtually via the Chilmark library. Presenter is renowned flutist Galen Abdur-Razzaq, who will talk about the contributions of women to the history of jazz, especially at a time when it was dominated by men. 6:30 pm. –C.B.
