Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Wait, National Beer Day and National Alcohol Screening Day are on the same day? How can this be? It’s also National Burrito Day. Sounds like a good day to have lunch at La Choza. It’s also opening day of the baseball season, where every team still has hope. Finally, our subject line for yesterday’s Minute was insensitive to the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah). We apologize and thank a reader for bringing it to our attention. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

New Art arriving daily. Open 7 days a week. A warm welcome awaits you.
Kristal’s out
Jeff Kristal won’t be seeking reelection to the Tisbury select board. The nomination period came and went with Kristal not applying to have his name on the ballot. The select board member has been called a bully for his role in attempting to get a police officer to target a business owner with traffic tickets. And that wasn’t his only alleged transgression. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the story, including some comments from the man who will likely replace Kristal.
Season’s greetings
Town meeting season, that is. Four towns will gather next Tuesday night for annual and special town meetings — Tisbury, Oak Bluffs, West Tisbury, and Edgartown. All of the towns will be voting on the housing bank legislation, but each has its own unique warrant with other town issues, like revamping human resources in Tisbury, upgrading a wastewater treatment plant in O.B., limiting house sizes in W.T., and developing a wastewater management plan in Edgartown.

Ban-wagon
The county commission is talking about getting on the moped ban-wagon. At a meeting on Wednesday, the commissioners discussed the Oak Bluffs legislation that we wrote about earlier this week. The commissioners would like an Islandwide ban on moped rentals citing the safety concerns. Meanwhile, another commissioner thinks that e-bikes should be next on the list. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this story.
MEETINGS
No meetings are scheduled for Friday. Gives you time to read up on those town meeting warrants.

South Shore Living in Stonewall Association
Sponsored

South shore beachy living in Stonewall Association. Private parking and access to a lovely swim and surf beach in a beloved area of Chilmark. Super sunny lot fully engineered and ready to go. Single family dwelling and guest house allowed according to the Chilmark by-laws. This lot includes rights to the private association beach. Great location in Chilmark, close to the Quitsa landing, Chilmark Center and Menemsha. Really a dream location. The lot offers interesting topography and flexibility. A rare opportunity in Chilmark.
Quote of the Day
"They’re especially dangerous when driven on the long, sandy, winding roads of the Island, where speed limits can be high and visibility can be low."–State Rep. Dylan Fernandes, D-Falmouth, testifying on a home-rule petition to ban moped rentals in Oak Bluffs

Hot Topic Comment
Marge Harris commented on the story about teachers rallying at Five Corners. "I am a retired educator and I taught over 27 years at MVRHS. Every kid that came into my classroom was an individual who needed to learn and I had to find a myriad of ways to teach so that everyone one of them would have success in their learning. Yes, that is the commitment of teaching and most times we meet that challenge, but not always. However, when we fall short, we keep on trying! Teaching, to me, is a powerful profession because it is so challenging and at times overwhelming to know that we, teachers, truly make a difference in kids’ lives!"

Hot Topic Letter
Suzanne Robotti wrote to condemn the comment made by Terry Donahue at a recent meeting of the Oak Bluffs planning board. "Susan Desmarais bravely came to the meeting with factual and important information. We are proud that Ms. Desmarais is a member of DES Action USA, and we stand beside her in educating people about DES and endocrine disruptors — which synthetic turf with PFAS and DES both are. To attempt to silence this woman by insulting her story and gender is disgusting."
Today: There is a presentation on Protecting Girls of Color from the School-to-Prison Pipeline via the Vineyard Haven library. A Mass. report was recently released showing that girls of color were more likely to receive exclusionary discipline compared to white schoolmates. Info says this event is appropriate for girls from 7th grade up. 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

Women in Jazz: History and Live Performance happens virtually via the Chilmark library. Presenter is renowned flutist Galen Abdur-Razzaq, who will talk about the contributions of women to the history of jazz, especially at a time when it was dominated by men. 6:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: I haven’t seen "CODA" yet but I want to. The film won Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor this year, maybe the best takeaway from Oscar night. Film Center. 7:30 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
We look at Tina Miller’s Open-Face BLT with Basil Mayo and we wonder where it has been all of our lives. We love it that much. Our MVT BLTs look nothing like this. We’ll go home tonight and try to replicate this masterpiece. And then we’ll eat it.

Garden goddess
Roxanne Kapitan has been around her fair share of gardens. She is the landscape manager at Oakleaf Landscape, and has been helping clients create their perfect garden setting for a decade. Not only is her current backyard garden in Oak Bluffs bursting at the seams with fresh produce and other plants, but it’s all part of a regenerative process that is becoming more commonplace with at-home gardens. Read Valerie Sonnenthal’s Gardens of Love story to learn all about this garden goddess and her methods.
