What if you run a ferry service and the vessels you have are starting to show their age?
That’s what’s going on with the Steamship Authority right now. A consultant has let the SSA know that three of its freight ferries are getting too old to continue repairing. The SSA is going to look at some vessels used for the oil exploration industry as possible replacements. Find out what else the SSA board is contemplating. Editor George Brennan has the story.
Hail to the chief Chief Steven White, executive officer of Station Menemsha, was promoted to senior chief Tuesday in a ceremony at the Coast Guard boathouse in Menemsha. The ceremony took place before his colleagues and his family members. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the details.
Cleaning up Lapels caused a bit of stir among its customers when it sent out a notice saying that no more orders would be accepted. That left people wondering if the dry cleaner was going out of business. It turns out they just need some time to do some spring cleaning, give their staff some training, and also to give the staff a bit of a breather before the summer crunch. Dana Hodsdon suggests the town find a different way to hire and screen new employees. “What if the town officials that hire employees for the town go through a hiring agency? Tisbury seems to have repeated offensive people that then costs us, in the long run, more than what a good agency would have.”
Hot Topic Letter James Malkin, Martha’s Vineyard’s representative on the SSA board, took issue with The Times editorial about legislation affecting the Steamship Authority. “I do believe that public input and involvement and transparency are crucial to our democracy. That’s why I find the SSA legislation to be a local issue that transcends our island and speaks to national concerns.”
