Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 2020, Gov. Charlie Baker decided to keep Massachusetts schools closed for the remainder of the year as COVID case counts in the state spiked. Now, schools on-Island are managing the spread and providing essential education. Speaking of which, it’s National Kindergarten Day. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Busted
Tisbury Police Det. Charles Duquette recently led a nighttime heroin bust at the Steamship Authority’s Vineyard Haven terminal. Prior to the arrest, Duquette, members of the Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task Force, and two uniformed Tisbury police officers executed a search warrant. Reporter Rich Saltzberg brings us the news.
Miller Time
Jessica Miller is the newly elected member of the West Tisbury select board. She made her debut at a recent board meeting, and was greeted warmly by fellow members. Additionally, Cynthia Mitchell is the new board chair, and Skipper Manter is the new vice chair (it was the first time the board met with all seats filled following the death of longtime board member Kent Healy). Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this story.

Filling the need
The free dental care clinic that has been up and running since April 4, Vineyard Smiles, will wrap up their annual program tomorrow. The clinic, which initially kicked off in 2005, has seen a steady flow of around 16 adult patients a day who need dental assistance in some way, shape, or form. Read Reporter Abigail Rosen’s update here.
Bonus Photo
Back Door Donuts in Oak Bluffs is open for the season. The Times crew enjoyed some delicious doughnuts to celebrate.
MEETINGS
No meetings tomorrow. It’ll be a perfect day to get outside and enjoy some sun (it’s supposed to be 66 degrees with clear skies).

Quote of the Day
"It’s just something we don’t want to be part of. We are a family friendly restaurant. We toe the line correctly, and these unfortunate bad apples ruined it for all of us." –Alexander Tamargo, Town Bar MV manager, apologizing for incidents at the restaurant that drew police response and caused the Edgartown select board to cut their hours.

Hot Topic Comment
Heidi Lehigh commented on the story about the SSA lifting their mask mandate on all ferries and shuttle buses one day after telling the Steamship Authority board that they would continue to impose it. "Following the science in 2020, when there were more hypotheticals than absolutes, is different from following the science in 2022 — when we have 2 years’ worth of data. Congrats to SSA for making a great decision!"

Hot Topic Letter
Elise Chapdelaine of Norfolk, Va., wrote a letter to the editor thanking Martha’s Vineyard RMV employees who went above and beyond when she was in a tough spot. "I was in quite a bind with an expired license with little time to get it corrected (as an active-duty military member I was ‘home’ on the Island for just a short time and dealing with some other challenges) and not only did they get me set right, they did so graciously and expeditiously."
