Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
According to the Twitterverse, on this day in 1974, principal photography began on "Jaws" on the Vineyard. Today is also Melanoma Monday, a good reminder that everyone should get checked by a dermatologist for potential skin cancer. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Flight risk
The national shortage of pilots isn’t yet affecting the flight schedules at Martha’s Vineyard Airport, but there is a possibility that trips to and and from the Island will be affected this summer. After a report that Cape Air was significantly cutting back on its flights to and from Nantucket, reporter Eunki Seonwoo checked in with airport and Cape Air officials on the Vineyard and has this story.
Winds of change
We’re starting to feel the effects of the offshore wind industry on the Island. Last week, Vineyard Wind held a job fair for prospective employees on the Island. The Vineyard will be home to an operations and maintenance facility, a terminal, and a staging site at the airport. Reporter Rich Saltzberg attended the fair and has this update.

Gone to pot?
Two Island dispensaries were discussed at the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. Fine Fettle in West Tisbury is requesting a change to allow walk-in customers because business is well below expected projections. Meanwhile, commissioners are concerned about traffic on Mechanic Street in Vineyard Haven as they consider a second marijuana retail outlet for that road. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this story.

Quote of the Day
"I’m a good man. I was scared for my daughter, I didn’t mean to hurt the dog."–Shane Tank, the man charged with animal cruelty for allegedly throwing a puppy that he says was being aggressive

Hot Topic Comment
Marie Black commented on our editorial, which in part bemoaned the lack of candidates for public office. "Perhaps the reason fewer people run for town office is because, with housing insecurity, they don't know if they'll be living in the same town for any extended amount of time."

Hot Topic Letter
Ryan Kent is one of several people to write ahead of Wednesday’s vote by the planning board on a synthetic turf field. "I firmly believe that if we have the ability to improve the lives of the people around us, it is the duty of responsible community members to do so. Making sure this project happens is not a frivolity, it is our responsibility and a golden opportunity to do the right thing."
Today: Kayaking, owl prowls, counting horseshoe crabs — there’s no end to what you can do at Felix Neck. Go ahead, what are you waiting for? –Connie Berry

You can still watch an interview with photographer/actor Paul Doherty on MVTV in case you missed it. I’m a big fan, so I plan to watch the whole thing when I get a chance. Judging by his beautiful photography, this exhibit was a popular one at the studio. Anytime. –C.B.
Tomorrow: The May meeting of the Neighborhood Convention happens at the Federated Church in Edgartown. Hear Renee Lohman of Navigator Homes talk about the greenhouse project model. 11 am. –C.B.

Colors of Mother’s Day
The annual Edgartown Board of Trade Pink and Green Weekend event is being oriented more toward the celebration of Mother’s Day this year, but there’s still plenty of fun and colorful activities around town on the weekend. The combination of a spring celebration and a Mother’s Day bash includes a tasty brunch, horse-drawn carriage rides, and the Mother’s Day 5k. Read all about it in Abby Remer’s most recent story.

We sent you The Minute because you gave us your email address at an Islanders Write or Islanders Read the Classics event (or at the Ag Fair), or you responded to an ad for The Minute and signed up on our website.
