Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
It’s National Teacher Appreciation Day and what better way to appreciate your child’s teacher than with National Raspberry Popover Day? It’s also National Two Different Colored Shoes Day for those who celebrate, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention it’s World Press Freedom Day. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Holding court
Vineyarders will join people all across the country this evening in support of reproductive rights. The rally at the Edgartown District Court building begins at 5 pm and is being organized locally by Indivisible MV. It’s in reaction to the leaked majority opinion of the Supreme Court that overturns Roe v. Wade. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this story and we’ll be there to cover the event.
Making a difference
The MVRHS school committee was asked to support an out-of-state retreat for Stand With Everyone Against Rape (SWEAR) for a program that deals with gender-based violence, rape culture, and other related topics. The committee also discussed the future of Zoom meetings. Reporter Lucas Thors has this story. Meanwhile, editor George Brennan attended a Zoom meeting today of the Oak Bluffs board of health and their continued discussion of PFAS and the synthetic turf field. Here is that update.

Absence of Pride
While members of the LGBTQ+ community were at a meeting in Oak Bluffs last week asking the select board to approve Pride week events and the flying of a Progress Pride flag on town flagpoles, someone was stealing a similar flag from a church building in Vineyard Haven. The church leader believes the theft is a hate crime and has reported it to the Tisbury Police Department. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this story.
MEETINGS
The Oak Bluffs planning board meets at 5 pm. Remote access. Here is the agenda.

The MVRHS funding formula working group meets at 6 pm at the high school library. Here is
our story on the last meeting.

Quote of the Day
"Our team feels this is a significant net positive for the community. We will be making an extensive investment into this property and the building."
–Attorney Daniel Glissman, representing Main Street Medicinals, on a second marijuana dispensary planned for Vineyard Haven

Hot Topic Comment
Susanna Sturgis responded to yesterday’s featured comment by Maria Black. "Just in general, renters seem to be seriously under-represented on boards and committees of the various towns. One reason is probably that given the time and energy required to make rent (if you’re lucky enough to have a year-round rental), there isn’t much left over for volunteer or semi-volunteer commitments, especially if one has family responsibilities."

Hot Topic Letter
John Zarba wrote to say it is time for the planning board in Oak Bluffs stop delaying the field project at MVRHS. "Now is the time for the planning board to approve this special permit while ensuring the safety of our groundwater, by guaranteeing that the application includes all safeguards permissible by law and state regulations. Both are possible with your vote to approve the special permit."
Today: Eversource hosts a Community Conversation at Deon’s Kitchen at the VFW tonight. They want to replace and add another undersea cable from the mainland to the Island. I’m real interested to find out how this turns out. 5:30 to 7 pm. –Connie Berry

Terry Cole tells her "Jeopardy" Story tonight via the Vineyard Haven library. I watch the game show just about every night. I remember when I thought my mom was old because she watched game shows at night. How silly. 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Spend Happy Hour at the P.A. Club and hear live music by my friend Rose Guerin, along with delicious food from Mo’s Lunch. 4:30 pm until the music stops. –C.B.

Going wild
You have to love a series that focuses on Our Great National Parks. And when that Netflix documentary includes the dulcet tones of Island resident Barack Obama, well it’s likely to hook you like the tusk of an elephant. Assistant features editor Lucas Thors has been watching the series and says you should, too. He gives it four stars. Mr. Obama, if you’d like to stop by the newsroom for a word on why you didn’t get five stars, we’re all ears. Read the review here.
We sent you The Minute because you gave us your email address at an Islanders Write or Islanders Read the Classics event (or at the Ag Fair), or you responded to an ad for The Minute and signed up on our website.
