Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
It’s Star Wars Day, aka May the Fourth be with you. Today is also National Weather Observers Day. We certainly appreciate the folks who collect data for the National Weather Service from the Island. We wrote about them here. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Court session
Less than 24 hours after a leaked document from the Supreme Court was reported that would change abortion laws in some states, Islanders were on the steps of the Edgartown courthouse protesting the decision. They held signs, they told stories, and they got a lot of support from passing motorists. The call to action was sent out early in the day yesterday across the country. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this story and Jeremy Driesen has the photos.
Peaked curiosity
Playing the role of Michael Corleone in today’s newsletter is Brian Dowd. "Every time I think I’m out, they pull me back in." Brian attended last night’s Chilmark select board meeting as a freelancer and has this update on the Peaked Hill Pastures project. You can read it here.

Powerful buzz
Not many people took Eversource up on their "community conversation" about an upcoming undersea cable project from the mainland to the Island, but those who did are enthusiastic about it. The utility’s representatives set up a show at Chef Deon’s and the VFW in Oak Bluffs to present the plans to replace one cable and add a fifth electricity line to the Vineyard. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has the story.

MEETINGS

The Martha’s Vineyard Commission meets at 7 pm Thursday. Remote access. Here is the agenda.

The MVTimes: Our reporting makes a difference
Journalism that matters, where you need it, when you need it. Want more?
Quote of the Day
"This is the result of decades of right-wing religious extremists infiltrating our political system. This has been their long game with the ultimate goal of overturning the right to safe and legal abortion. The ultimate goal is to control women. We’re going to see an attack on birth control. We’re going to see an attack on gay marriage, that’s coming. We’re going to see an attack on interracial marriage. They want to bring us back to the turn of the 20th century. We’re really gearing up for this fight."–Carla Cooper of Indivisible MV on the leaked Supreme Court ruling.

Hot Topic Comment
Prof. Susan Stehlik commented on the leaked Supreme Court ruling. "This is not what the home of the brave and the free is all about. It is about a bunch of guys fearful of losing power to someone who is not white, wealthy and male. And, guess what, guys: you are no longer the majority. The majority is Black, Brown, gay, female, trans, AND, we’re shareholders, voters, educators, parents and donors who will not be silenced by anyone – not with our voice or our vote or our pocketbooks. We will welcome you to the 21st century."

Hot Topic Letter
Add Charlotte Packer to the list of people writing in to urge the Oak Bluffs planning board to support the synthetic turf field. "Can we please stop acting like Congress and just pass what we all know should have been passed a long time ago? Enough is enough."
Today: Polly Hill hosts Spring Wildflowers of Kentucky, a virtual event. My dad was born in Kentucky, but all I remember from visiting there are white clapboard houses and porch swings. Not a bad memory at all, come to think of it. 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

Phil Weinstein, who guides us through the likes of Faulkner and Tolstoy, shares his newest book, "Soul Error." He’ll talk about it at the Vineyard Haven library. The library says the book "explores the ways in which, stubbornly yet creatively, we go through life misreading ourselves and our world." Love it. 6 pm. –C.B.

Tomorrow: Louisa Gould Gallery hosts a solo exhibit of Linda Besse’s "Wildlife," oil paintings of wild, wild life. Main Street, Vineyard Haven. 11 am to 5 pm. –C.B.

Movies! Check out what’s playing at Island theaters here.

Hearing our Brazilian Voices
A new MV Times column focused on the Brazilian voices in the Island community will appear in the Community section of the print newspaper going forward. For the first iteration Brazilian immigrant and mental health counselor Luiza Mouzinho describes what it means to her to be Brazilian. This includes battling long standing racism and oppression, and at the same time celebrating the rich culture of Brazil. Read Mouzinho’s powerful story here, which includes a Portuguese Translation, and keep an eye out for more Brazilian Voices columns.
