Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is National Lost Sock Memorial Day. With a 21-year-old who just returned home from college, we have lots of mismatches to celebrate. It is also National Homefront Heroes Day, which today is our washer and dryer. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

New sheriff in town?
Erik Blake, the retiring police chief in Oak Bluffs, is running for Dukes County sheriff. Because Blake is also a Democrat, he will meet incumbent Sheriff Robert Ogden in the Sept. 6 primary election. Blake hasn’t yet started raising money to campaign because the select board has not picked his successor. Ogden told The Times he knew Blake was considering a run, but didn’t know it was official. Editor George Brennan has this story.
Farm stand
The West Tisbury Farmers Market would like to remain at the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society property, but faces some hurdles in order to do so. The Vineyard Conservation Society, which co-manages an agricultural restriction on the property, has provided some pushback to the idea. Questions have also been raised about whether the farmers market is too commercial to be located in the residential zone. There are two meetings this week that will decide the fate of the farmers market. Editor George Brennan has this story.

Housing dilemma
Island Elderly Housing’s Aidylberg III would meet a growing need on the Island — affordable housing for seniors. But that doesn’t mean the project is going to get a free pass from the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. The MVC pushed back against some of the proposed architectural features, including the use of plastics. Meanwhile, concerns were raised about the house that was torn down to make way for the new building. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this story.

Quote of the Day
"This is the reaction I’ve gotten from everybody. It’s about time. The perception was I was already a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and people couldn’t believe this was my first nomination."–Carly Simon on being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Hot Topic Comment
R. Scott Patterson commented on the pushback that Oak Bluffs planning board chair Ewell Hopkins is receiving for his support of the Field Fund. "No such thing as impartiality. We all have opinions and interests. Chairman just putting bias on a shirt for all to see. Everyone else voting also have opinions and biases."

Hot Topic Letter
Now that the planning board has voted, assistant superintendent Richie Smith is calling on the community to come together. "I am hopeful we can, as an Island community, come together to find a path to safe, playable fields and a new track for our children. It has become clear to me the only way to do this is to begin working together."
Today: Coast Guard Station Menemsha offers a tour so we can see how they prepare for storms, search and rescue, and more. 4 to 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

All you need to do is take a drive down Beach Road to prepare for
Retreating from the Shore: Time to Start the Conversation at the M.V. Film Center. Join the Bluedot Living magazine team, along with Liz Durkee and more, as they talk about the obvious — climate change. Time to learn more. 5:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Looking to take a lovely Stroller Walk with the kiddies? Join the Family Center at the State Forest for some time in the great outdoors. I don’t have a stroller or babies, but I’d love the walk. 11 am. –C.B.

Shelf life
The Island Food Pantry is dealing with unprecedented growth in the number of clients seeking services, while at the same time the Island resource is having trouble keeping up with the demand because of supply chain issues at the Boston Food Bank. The pandemic and the dramatic increase in the cost of living, in general, and housing, in particular, is exacerbating the need for people who need assistance. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this update.
