Another housing bank win The Coalition to Create the Martha’s Vineyard Housing Bank continued its winning streak on Thursday during the Aquinnah town election. There were 169 voters who cast ballots and the vast majority approved of the housing bank, which would use funds from a 2 percent transfer fee on property purchases to fund affordable housing on the Island. There were also two contested races that were decided, as well as some other ballot questions. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has the details.
Farmers Market gets the go-ahead The West Tisbury zoning board of appeals gave a thumbs up for a special permit for the West Tisbury Farmers Market — a conclusion reached after hours of deliberation by zoning board of appeals members and the West Tisbury conservation commission. The decision allows the market to conduct its operations on the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society fairgrounds instead of at the Grange Hall. Read reporter Eunki Seonwoo’s story here.
Razing questions Martha’s Vineyard Commissioners discussed a demolition policy related to the preservation of historic buildings during their most recent meeting. The policy, which was approved by the commission, lists conditions that applicants must adhere to in order to raze a historic building. Commissioners also worked through a redevelopment proposal for the EduComp building, and voiced concerns about anticipated traffic near the proposed location of Main Street Medicinals — slated to be the Vineyard’s third pot shop. Hot Topic Comment Our story on an unplanned stop by a military plane at Martha’s
Vineyard Airport continues to generate a lot of comments. Here’s what Don Keller had to say: "For all of you who think you are supporting the military by condoning unauthorized actions using government equipment, you are flat out wrong. I was in the military. There is a chain of command and a procedure for everything. You follow orders whenever you have military equipment at your disposal. They were ordered to take that aircraft to California. Period. They disobeyed a direct order and basically stole the aircraft to run a personal errand."
Hot Topic Letter Philip Levine offers some options to finance a bridge to Martha’s Vineyard. "The shortest bridge would be about 3.5 miles from Woods Hole to M.V., but this may not be the best choice. Consideration of the existing infrastructure might lead to one or more alternative locations on the Cape and M.V. sides, even though the bridge would be longer."

This weekend:What we’ve all been waiting for: M.V. Community Services’ Electronics Disposal Day. Can I just tell you how many times I’ve meant to do this? 9 am to 2 pm. There’s a Climate Action Week Grand Finale at the Grange from 10 am to 2 pm. All sorts of great information, live music, food and more. Another nice thing to do for the climate: Donate your used books to the Oak Bluffs library this weekend. 10 am to 2 pm. Danielle Mulcahy talks about Raising Backyard Chickens at the Edgartown library, well not at the library itself, but she tells us how we can do it at home. 10:30 am. Juli Vanderhoop discusses small things we can all do to mitigate our impact on the climate and become more self-sufficient. This sounds like a great idea. Aquinnah library. 1:30 pm. There’s a Rally at 5 Corners in Vineyard Haven for those standing up for women’s health and reproductive rights. All are welcome. 5 pm. Vineyard Montessori School hosts its 25th annual Big Night Out fundraiser at the M.V. Museum. Open to the public and features live music by the Brothers McMahon (who I love) and great silent auction items donated by Island businesses. You’ll probably see our very own Kris Rabasca there, cutting a rug with his wife Rebecca. 7 to 10 pm. –C.B. On Sunday, the M.V.

She draws immense inspiration from old pictures — a process she says nurtures spontaneity and imaginative self-expression. DuMar will be holding a creative writing workshop based on this concept at this year’s Islanders Write, so folks can bring personal photos to the event to write from.
