Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted. The volcano is in southwestern Washington. The massive eruption killed 57 people and devastated 210 square miles of wilderness — an area about three times the size of Martha’s Vineyard. It’s National No Dirty Dishes

Day off! There is a reason why the Tisbury select board promoted two sergeants last week and it wasn’t all roses and sunshine. Sgt. Jeff Day, who had been on paid leave for unspecified reasons, resigned from the department. Day has been at the center of controversies, including falsely arresting a man because his "distinctive gait" led Day to believe it was a man wanted by the police. Reporter Rich Saltzberg, who has been uncovering some of the travails of Day with public records requests, has this story.
MVRHS next steps The MVRHS school committee is considering an appeal of the decision by the Oak Bluffs planning board to reject a special permit allowing a synthetic turf field as part of the project. In a split vote, the committee tentativelys scheduled an executive session for Monday to discuss the option with their attorney. Some members appeared ready to move on with grass fields. Reporter Lucas Thors has this update.
Courting voters Rob Galibois announced his run for district attorney in January, but on Tuesday he officially kicked off his campaign on Martha’s Vineayrd at the Edgartown courthouse followed by a reception at The Wharf. Galibois spoke a little about his plans for the DA’s office should he get elected, and called for an independent investigation into a case where DA Michael O’Keefe has a conflict. "From a seasoned boater; the pilot/captain as skilled as they may be are dealing with not just fog but wind. The side of these ferries act like sails. The area where the boat hit the dock is very tight. GPS May tell you your Lat/Lon but it doesn’t tell you a 30 KT gust is going to blow you into a pier!! The response time of this ferry is not even in the same book of Physics as a jet landing on a 2.5 mile runway. You can’t compare a Corvette to a bicycle!!!"

Becoming ‘Dreamtina’ Island-born singer/songwriter Charlotte Rose Benjamin has always been passionate about music. When she was young, she considered herself very shy, but was always ready to perform in front of people — whether atop a table at a restaurant surrounded by strangers, or in the living room in front of her parents. Now, Benjamin has released her debut album "Dreamtina," and it’s already seeing success.
