Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Happy Insect Repellent Awareness Day! Were you already aware? We've barely seen a mosquito this year, but maybe we're just lucky. Whether equipping DEET or permethrin, we wish you minimal discomfort from the Island's tiny
bloodsucking pests — particularly if you're enjoying World Cider Day outside. A fun final thought: three-inch, bright yellow, 6-foot-web-building Jorō spiders, originally from Japan, are due to spread to Massachusetts anytime. These orb weavers are harmless to humans and could help reduce mosquito populations. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.
The Martha’s Vineyard Airport regained control of its parking lot from LAZ Parking on June 1 and immediately raised rates for short- and long-term parking. The biggest change eliminated an annual $500 parking permit for vehicles registered on the Vineyard, increasing that fee to $1,250. Only a handful of Islanders buy that annual pass, but everyone who uses the 120-space lot will pay higher hourly fees. Read more here.
Chappy dispute reignited No one seems happy with the Edgartown conservation commission decision to allow a limited number of over-sand vehicles on parts of Chappaquiddick overseen by
the Trustees of Reservations. Abutters to these areas filed two appeals to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, arguing that the over-sand vehicles would negatively impact the environment and wildlife. The Trustees also filed two appeals, saying the commission overreached its authority. The commission insisted Monday its decision was appropriate. Read more here.
Two charged with felonies after Oak Bluffs fight Two men have been charged with multiple felonies after a beating outside The Ritz Cafe in Oak Bluffs. A video of
the incident obtained by The Times shows a shouting match after midnight on Friday that quickly escalated. An injured man was transported to the Martha's Vineyard Hospital following the attack. Read more here.

It's easy being green in the springtime with Tips for Purée of Sorrel, from the book "Summer Cooking," by Elizabeth David, shared by Garden Notes columnist Abigail Higgins many seasons ago.
The creamy mixture can be used for omelets, sandwiches, veggie dip, meat, fish, and much more, including Cream of Sorrel Soup.

Animal Owner First Aid Event This Wednesday, Dr. Linda Cimetti from South Shore Equine and Dr. Michelle Jasny, who has her own practice on-Island and the Visiting Vet column in the MVT, will teach animal owners how to be better prepared in the event of a medical emergency with their animal. The event, held at Misty Meadows in West Tisbury, will provide attendees with hands-on first
aid practices and homecare advice. Due to a shortage of veterinary services on the Island, it is typically difficult for animal owners to reach a vet. The information provided will help attendees handle a situation during which a vet is unaccessible. Find out more here.
