Candidates discuss the issues
Arielle Faria and Thomas Moakley are running to become the Vineyard’s next state representative, and voters got to hear their thoughts on various issues during a forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard. From improving the Steamship Authority to public education, each has a vision they want to bring to Beacon Hill. Read more here.

A boat parade against offshore wind
There are reports of another broken turbine blade, this time in the UK. But it’s made from the same blade makers behind Vineyard Wind. Meanwhile, one fishermen’s alliance is setting out to organize a protest this week. The “flotilla” protest will join boats together from across the east coast. Read more here.

D1 milestone
Chilmark native Bryan Sornas made a little piece of Vineyard history last month when he committed to play Division I baseball. The first-generation Brazilian American got his start in the Island Little Leagues before playing at MVRHS. He’s also played on the international stage. Read his story here.

Quote of the Day
“Obviously, there’s a whole excitement about playing at Fenway. It’s like the Super Bowl — a whole different atmosphere.”
—High school athletic director Mark McCarthy on the Island Cup going to Fenway Park

Hot Topic Comment
“I support the new plan! Teachers are there to teach each day with students there to learn. It is not the job of teachers to have to police cell phone usage in the classroom.”
—Lois Williamson on a new policy of no cell phones, smartwatches, and other devices in the high school

Hot Topic Letter
“Doing nothing, or waiting until the last minute and then trying to balance clashing priorities and inventory expenses, is not the best strategy. My point is that this is an opportunity for everyone to enjoy a bit of history in the community. We all know that it can go either way, but what is best for the people and Island of Martha's Vineyard?”
—Marty Milner writes to us about a lack of planning around the upcoming “Jaws” 50th

Humanity toward the homeless
Psychiatrist Charles Silberstein remembers his work with New York City’s homeless population at Bellevue Hospital, and draws lessons for caring for the Vineyarders in need of housing. Silberstein also recalls the story of Ralph Silverman, who spent 20 years homeless in Southern Florida and is the subject of Fred Waitzkin's new book “Anything Is Good.” Read about Ralph’s story here.
