Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
We have a lot of conservation land on the Island, but do you know what happened on this day in 1872? Yellowstone became the first national park in the world. Today sounds like a nice day for a walk on a trail. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust
In 2020, IHT cut the ribbon for seven new, year-round, affordable apartments created by repurposing a bed-and-breakfast in Tisbury. Watch our film to see how we did it. You can help create critically needed affordable housing by clicking here to donate now.

Sea Breeze vet retiring
Dr. Constance Breese, of Sea Breeze veterinary services in Vineyard Haven, is retiring after 40 years in the business. She says that she is grateful for the support of Islanders during her career, and that choosing to retire was difficult as more people are worrying about access to vets. This comes as the AHCA vet is in danger of losing its lease. Read more here.
Portuguese boost
West Tisbury officials are considering ways to improve access to services for those who primarily speak Portuguese. This was seen as a way to support the on-Island Brazilian community. While there is no decision made yet, it opens a can of worms that should be opened, as one select board member put it. Read more here.

Exciting new rental opportunity
If you’re in the market, there’s a $1 million-a-month rental available in Chilmark. Among the amenities it provides, there’s a custom Italian boat. But it turns out that the same house that is fetching $1 million a month has some history in Chilmark. Read that story here.

— Sandy Joyce and Susie Wallo on the support given by Islanders during the 2023 Red Stocking campaign

Today: I haven’t tried the Friday Reset at the M.V. Museum yet, so this might be my night. It’s a chance to relax and regroup with board games, crafts, puzzles, and I believe tasty snacks are available, all included with admission. And you can wander around the museum. 5 to 8 pm. –Connie Berry

This movie sounds fun, maybe because I’m of a certain age: "Golden Years." A retired couple goes on a cruise: she’s psyched to add some pizazz to her marriage, he invites his best friend to come along. I’m guessing she’s not happy. M.V. Film Center. 7:30 pm. –C.B.

This weekend: Polly Hill Arboretum offers a Winter Walk at 10 am. Just think, in a couple of weeks it will be a spring walk. If you’d rather take a walk with an alpaca, we’ve got that going on too. Island Alpaca. 10:30 am. You can al-pack-a up the family and take them to the M.V. Ice Arena for a Free Family Skate (with hot chocolate) at 11 am. The Oak Bluffs library brings us Community Climate Discussion: Emergency Preparedness at Home and Sheltering in Place. We’re talking extreme weather events and power outages. This happens at my house at least once a year. You would think I’d have supplies and a plan. Nope. 1:30 pm. The Film Center screens "American Fiction." I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews for this one. And it’s on the list of films to see before the Oscars. 4 pm. –C.B.

This Sunday event appeals to my inner church lady: Making Peace with the Bible with Rev. Lara K-J Campbell at the UU Society in Vineyard Haven. It’s a source of everyday life practice for some and the complete opposite for others. I’d love to hear what she has to say. 10 am. "Flowers for Winter 2024" at the Louisa Gould Gallery features artists Alexandra Averbach, Wooley Dutton, Nadia Mahfuz, Mary Parkman, and Peggy Turner Zablotny. 11 am to 5 pm. Wouldn’t it be cool to learn how to grow your own mushrooms? Meg Athearn of Morning Glory Farm tells us how at the Ag Hall. Follow directions to register. 1 pm. In the Kitchen with…
We’re introducing a new series, what we’re calling "In the kitchen with …" Each month we’ll meet up with an Island chef or foodie as they prepare a recipe. This week, it’s the legendary Tina Miller, who is cooking up a dish called Fish en Papillote. The recipe calls for baking the fish inside of a pouch made of folded parchment paper. Read the first in the series here.

We sent you The Minute because you gave us your email address at an Islanders Write or Islanders Read the Classics event (or at the Ag Fair), or you responded to an ad for The Minute and signed up on our website. The Minute will arrive Monday through Friday by the end of the workday, and features the day's news, important meetings and events, and even what to make for supper, along with some newsletter-only coupons and insider tips. We may produce special weekend editions and occasionally send you special offers from select advertisers. Got this forwarded from a friend? Sign up for yourself here. See past newsletters here.
