Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
In case you were wondering, our newsroom was not inundated from yesterday’s flash flooding, though we had some solid leaking. And a huge shoutout to all that came out for Islanders Write! We had a blast. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Calling out leadership
An effort to ban moped rentals in Oak Bluffs seems to have failed again. This is the second petition that voters at town meetings have sent to state lawmakers since 2018. Some want to reinvigorate efforts to ban the rentals in the wake of another tragic moped accident. Read more here.
More Steamship woes
Despite positive recruitment numbers, Steamship Authority officials are concerned about the shrinking pool of mariners to hire from. The discussion about the ferry line’s recruitment efforts followed a week that consisted of multiple cancellations that resulted from crew shortages. You can read those details here. Meanwhile, a problem with the Island Home’s generator caused eight trips to be canceled on Tuesday. Read more here.
Let the season begin
Election season is in full swing now with early, in-person voting beginning on Saturday. There are a few contested elections. On the Democrat’s ballot, there’s a contested race to represent the Island at the state house. And the Republicans have a few choices to run against Elizabeth Warren. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"Everyone of these Islanders are truth tellers … all fighting for the truth."
—Charles Sennott on the Islanders Write kick-off panel discussion

Hot Topic Comment
"Congratulations, Traeger! Your poster captures the simple, unchanging and reliable sweetness of the Ag Fair experience. Winning the poster contest is a thrill that’s hard to explain, but this question and answer article does a fine job, personalizing the artwork in a way we all can identify with."
—Jackie Mendez comments on the winner of the Fair’s poster contest

Hot Topic Letter
"The Up-Island Council on Aging invites residents — year-round and seasonal — of Aquinnah, Chilmark, and West Tisbury, aged 50 and over, to share their views in order to assess the region’s needs and improve programs and services. These surveys were mailed out at the beginning of July."

Today: There’s a Contra Dance with live music at the Grange Hall tonight. It’s part of a fundraising campaign to restore the historic hall. An old-fashioned American folk dance seems a great way to do that. 6:30 pm. –Connie Berry

I’ve thought about going to this all summer: CnC Productions' Old Skool Dance Café with DJ Smooth B happens at the P.A. Club. We’ve got a few more Tuesday nights to try it out. I bet we could all use more dancing and less sitting. Here’s your chance. 8:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: A Backyard Treasure Sale is happening at 140 N. William St. in Vineyard Haven. Proceeds benefit Reproductive Equity Now. Folks have been donating for a week so that you can browse and find something you absolutely love. Cash and check only. 12 to 4 pm. –C.B.

Paths to history
There's a dirt road under every paved one. Martha's Vineyard Museum knows each one is a path to history. They're revealing some of them over the next two weeks — Nancy Luce Day, Eisenstaedt talk, Linda Coombs’ talk, Widdiss Family exhibit, Sails to freedom. You may want to jump aboard.
We sent you The Minute because you gave us your email address at an Islanders Write or Islanders Read the Classics event (or at the Ag Fair), or you responded to an ad for The Minute and signed up on our website.
