It’s National Take a Hike Day. It’s been a nice day to get out into the great outdoors, and nothing sounds better than a nice walk to end this week. Or maybe it’s meant as a day to finally ask someone in your life to take a hike. Whichever, enjoy it. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Watch our film about repurposing a bed and breakfast and creating rental housing for hospital staff. Our hospital has 150 unfilled
jobs. The lack of affordable housing is one of the big reasons. You can help solve our island's year-round housing crisis by clicking here and donating now.

Housing vs nitrogen regsA local real estate association says that the Tisbury Board of Health’s new nitrogen regulations going into effect in the new year will be a detriment to some of the only remaining attainable neighborhoods for year-round residents on the Vineyard. Health board members say the town is required to clean up Tashmoo and the Lagoon, and the regulations are their way of doing it. Read more here.

Quote of the Day "[The film's protagonist] argued that rock and roll music and dancing, despite the noise, offers rejoice, exercise and celebration. And I will steal from that, and argue that pickleball does too." —Chilmark resident John Diamond comparing a prohibition on pickleball court construction to the events of the film "Footloose."Hot Topic Comment"The Steamship Authority was given its current form in 1960 because transportation was severed to the islands for a time. Today there are multiple providers and freight transport could be accommodated if allowed. The Port Authority doesn’t operate planes at Logan Airport. Their business model is to provide infrastructure - the airport - so the airlines can provide service. Is it time for the ‘Authority’ to focus on licensing and operating the docks and encourage proven ship operators to provide the transport?" —Bob Morris comments on our coverage of Vineyard
representatives weighing in on the Sankaty issueHot Topic Letter"We can all help create these places—coaches and parents, custodians, bus drivers, fans in the stands—but we also need the teammates. We need kids like Waylon to show up for practices where no one is watching, to hand the ball to others, get out of their way, and cheer for others’ success." —Mark Winters shares his gratitude for Unified Basketball
at MVRHS and Waylon Sauers who was on the team

This weekend: Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation brings us a cool event, Treasure on the Trails with Eben Horton’s glass floats. I want one, but I think you have to actually take a walk outdoors to find one. Check out a SMF trail from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. The West Tisbury Farmers Market is a go at the Ag Hall. I love it when it’s indoors. 9 am to noon. Check in with the Trustees of Reservations for a three-part photography course on capturing the beauty of the Island with their Capture the Island Photography Class at Wasque. Open to all levels. 9 am to 11 am. Merry Farm Pottery hosts a Kiln Opening Sale, celebrating the first firing of their new wood-burning kiln. You’ll also find quilts, coffee, and food there.
10 am to 5 pm. Vineyard Montessori School holds its 10th annual Truckin’ MV free community event from 10 am to 1 pm at the M.V. Regional High School parking lot. Bring the kids to check out all the cool drivable vehicles. Free. The West Tisbury library holds its Fall Book Sale from 11 am to 3 pm Saturday, and then again on Sunday, 12:30 to 3:30 pm. Great idea for holiday gifts. Met Opera Live at the M.V. Film Center offers us "X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X." Should be spectacular. 12:55 pm. Join the Chess Club at the Oak Bluffs library if you’re looking for a partner to play with or a challenge. 2 pm. I love Sauerkraut, so I’m happy to know that it’s also good for you. Learn how to ferment your own at the Chilmark library. 3 pm. The Sounds of Autumn will vibrate through the Edgartown library as they welcome traditional Brazilian music and jazz with the Lucas Ostinato Trio.
Free. 6:30 pm. –C.B.
On Sunday, the World Market Holiday Pop-up is in full swing at the Capawock Theater in Vineyard Haven.
This is one of my favorites. Hint, hint. 10 am to 6 pm. Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation invites you to a Guided Walk at Phillips Preserve. Free and open to the public, but follow the directions to register. 10 am to noon. There’s an Artist’s Talk and Reception with Bruce MacNelly at Pathways at the Chilmark Tavern. The exhibit features collage, paintings on canvas and wood, and a series of drawings on paper inspired by the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo. 2 to 4 pm. Join the M.V. Chamber Music Society for their annual Thanksgiving concert, featuring New England Conservatory ensemble Trio Gaia at the Edgartown library. Free. 4 pm. I love choices, but sometimes there are so many that I just stay home in my sweatpants and look at Facebook to see what other people are doing. –C.B.

Micah Thanhauser is all fired up The West Tisbury artist, of Merry Farm Pottery, recently saw a longtime dream come true when he was finally able to install a wood-fired kiln. Previously Merry Farm pieces were all made using a gas-fired kiln. Thanhauser says that the flame from the wood leaves its mark on the pots as it moves through the kiln, "unpredictable and full of grace." Read more about the artist and the process here.
