More testing for alpha-gal
Martha’s Vineyard Hospital shared statistics tracking the syndrome caused by lone star ticks. In 2020, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital conducted nine tests on individuals to determine whether their antibodies reacted to alpha-gal. Just two of these tests were positive. Already this year, 382 tests have been taken, and 140 came back positive. Read more here.
Gun law backing
A week prior to the fatal mass shooting that claimed 18 lives in Maine, Massachusetts house lawmakers successfully passed a bill fortifying existing gun laws throughout the commonwealth. Despite Massachusetts already having the lowest rate of gun violence in the country, state representatives voted in support of An Act Modernizing Firearm Laws, which is a bill seeking to strengthen current laws and close existing loopholes. More Steamship woes
The Steamship Authority has had delays with their trips, and two of their larger ferries were affected by mechanical issues. Some passengers with vehicles even missed their boats on Wednesday because there wasn’t enough room. Get the details here.

Waterfront House and Guesthouse, Chilmark Sponsored

Martha's Vineyard has many fine waterfront properties, but only a handful of exceptional ones. The Lee Family Compound is an exceptional, 3-acre waterfront property with breathtaking, unobstructed pond views from an elevated secure location, 750+ ft. of pond frontage, 48-ft. dock with separate mooring for easy access to Menemsha Pond and Vineyard Sound, and privacy without an abutter in view — all compliment the spacious, 5-bedroom, 5-bath, comfortable, well-built main house and the well-sited, 2-bedroom, 1-bath, contemporary guest house. The stunning views are everywhere, so 14 of the 16 rooms in both houses enjoy grand pond views. Because of the elevation, the sunsets, moonrises, and stargazing are some of the most remarkable the Island has to offer. The two-home compound can house 18 comfortably and is perfect for year-round family events. Come launch your canoe, kayak, or paddle board from spring to fall; swim, clam, or sail from a private sandy beach off the point all summer long; sunbathe on your private dock or on 3 decks or on the terraced lawn overhanging the cove; and enjoy seasonal holidays by a roaring fire with extended family and loved ones. This compound is proof that a picture is worth a 1,000 words (see Video Aerial Tour).

Hot Topic Letter
"Lord knows I believe in ecology. That’s me you see picking up plastic bottles at the Inkwell in the morning. But really, do I have to pay 10¢ for a paper bag just because I left my shopping bag at home?"
— Abigail McGrath writes in her essay, Four fine Island whines: Not Chardonnay or Montrachet

Staying in?
One of the vegetables that Island Grown Initiative features this time of year may look like pods from outer space, but the only part that's out of this world is the taste. Try it in their recipe for Kohlrabi and Carrot Slaw with Dressing.

Here and there
In the latest This Was Then column, we learn from Chris Baer about the Wast(e) Land, the "fabulous pond," and the Pond People of Pohogonot. Early British colonists settled the coast of the Vineyard, leaving the center the way it was. That led to labels like the "barren ragged plain of no town" in a crude 1698 map; another noted that the internal Island "will probably always remain without inhabitants." Read more here.
