Housing bill gets local supportGov. Maura Healey announced today a massive bond bill that would inject $4 billion into housing initiatives statewide. Accompanying the bill are a number of policy proposals, including one that would give towns the option to enact local housing transfer fees, in order for municipalities to generate revenue locally. The plan, dubbed the "Affordable Homes Act" also calls for seasonal community designation and giving homeowners the option to build accessory dwelling units. Find out more here.

Quote of the Day "This is a lifeline for communities where first-responders, healthcare workers, teachers, seniors and young people are simply priced out. On the Islands, we have seen generational families forced to leave their homes and firefighters commute four hours for their jobs: this will help to keep people in the communities they love." — Nantucket housing director Tucker
Holland on the recently unveiled Affordable Homes ActHot Topic Comment"The Steamship should hire these employees back and give them compensation for the time they were fired." — Tim Greer comments on our story about former Steamship Authority employees who are challenging the SSA’s COVID-19 vaccination policyHot Topic LetterTed Jochsberger writes to us
about the denial of proposed plastic fencing in West Tisbury: "There is little difference between PVC and the PFAS found in the proposed athletic field. Yet, while denying the use of the former received little resistance, an inordinate amount of time and money has been spent involving the use of the latter. One hopes that the politicians and various committee members are not more concerned with the health of the dead than of the living."

Librarians for the littles The Island’s children’s librarians tell us all about their work and what they love most about it in this story by Abby Remer. They each share responsibilities, including collection development, advising readers, and running toddler and children’s programs like crafts and story time, but each brings something special to the role, and each came to the position differently. Read about them here.
