Aquaculture shift
After facing some difficulties, Tisbury oyster farmers will be allowed more flexibility in how they care for their shellfish seeds. Amended aquaculture regulations went through a public hearing and the Tisbury select board heard from both advocates and those concerned about the new rules. Read more here.

Striped out An interstate management board set an emergency amendment in place over the summer to help the struggling striped bass. Earlier this year, the same agency formalized that emergency order, making it permanent until they decide otherwise. To keep a bass, it has to be
between 28 and 31 inches: not a big margin. Read that story here.

Paging Chilmark Republicans
Chilmark has been looking for a Republican to fill an open spot on its board of registrars, after the previous Republican member retired over a year ago. After advertisements failed to source an eligible candidate, the town plans to send a letter to each of its 39 registered Republicans. The board registers voters, processes absent voter applications, administers recounts and more. Check that out here.

This weekend: On Saturday, the Martha’s Vineyard Coast Guard Auxiliary offers a new boating safety course called Suddenly in Command, designed to help with boating basics. You have to register so hit it up now. 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.
The Trustees of Reservations hosts a Rachel Carson Book Club. Read the book and then meet up at a Trustees location for a hike. This time around it’s at Menemsha Hills. Read the directions. 9:30 am. Join the Democratic Council of Martha's Vineyard monthly meeting virtually. It's almost that time, folks. 9:30 am. Oak Bluffs library hosts what must be adorable: Stuffed Animal Storytime. Bring your favorite stuffie along and who says you can’t
just stay in your pjs. For ages 18 months to 5 years. 10:15 am. My most favorite P.A. Club hosts a great Valentine’s Day Pop-up Sale. Bring on the love, baby. You can eat, drink, and shop all at one place. 11 am to 3 pm. Strong Martha's Emily Mizer helps folks explore the world of body strength training in a beginner-friendly class geared toward women. Oak Bluffs library. 12 pm. Typing that one made me put my donut down for a sec. There’s another opportunity to sip, shop, and enhance your senses at Miner Family Gallery's as their love-in pop-up continues. They’ll have guest artists, one of whom is my pal Carrie Peckar with her Forever MV Jewelry. 12 to 4 pm. Sam Look, executive director of the Vineyard Conservation Society, goes over ways to care for your Vineyard Lawn. Let’s keep it safe for kids and pets. West Tisbury library. Free. 3 pm. There’s a Paint Party at Barn Bowl & Bistro. No experience needed and you can grab a Guinness and potstickers while you’re at it. It’s about time I created a masterpiece. I’m overdue. 6 to 8 pm. I weirdly envision some kind of military getup when I think of Contra Dancing. I don’t think that’s what they’ll be wearing for this fundraiser at the Grange Hall. Everyone is welcome. $5. 6:30 pm. –C.B.
On Sunday, get together for coffee and student-led convo about Environmental Issues, this time around human health impacts, at Rosewater Market & Takeaway. Bring your own mug. 10 am. Louisa Gould offers us an exhibit, "Flowers for Winter 2024," by artists Alexandra Averbach, Wooley Dutton, Nadia Mahfuz, Mary Parkman, and Peggy Turner Zablotny. 11 am to 5 pm. Pathways at the Chilmark Tavern has something interesting going on — as usual. Try Kirtan Call and Response Chanting with their yogic band Bhakti. 12 to 1 pm. Free. Edgartown library ups its game again with the Opera Club gathering for Offenbach's final opera, "Les Contes d'Hoffmann." Free. 1 pm. The West Tisbury library hosts Live Jazz with vocalist Darby Patterson with the Jeremy Berlin Trio. Free. 2:30 pm. I’ve decided this weekend will be spent with a log of premade chocolate chip cookie dough, a spoon, and my favorite pair of sweats. Can’t get here soon enough. –C.B.

A picture of Black heritageInternationally acclaimed artist Charly Palmer’s works are featured at the Oak Bluffs Library throughout the month of February. The show, curated by local gallery owner Val Francis, features a collection of mixed media portraits, small pen-and-ink drawings, communicating the power, beauty, and importance of African American people and the Black experience. Oh, and one of Palmer’s pieces was selected as the postage stamp in the Black Heritage series. Read that story here.
