The 78th annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby came to an end this weekend, with anglers of all ages gathering at Farm Neck Golf Club on Sunday in celebration of a derby well-fished. Dozens of kids and adults were awarded prizes, but only one fisherman got to take home a brand new boat. Here’s that story.

It’s no declarative victory, but the 11 Steamship Authority workers pushing back against a COVID-19 vaccine requirement won a victory in the courts. A panel of judges remanded a decision back to the lower court, saying that it had erred when rejecting the workers’ original lawsuit. No word yet if some of those workers will be rehired. Quote of the Day "Shannon’s reach and influence wasn’t just on the school level. She was a big part of the community. Many students and parents knew her through coaching. She was an English language teacher, but she supported language arts, so she supported literacy. She was one of those teachers that really just stepped up into multiple roles." — Superintendent Richie Smith on the passing of Tisbury School teacher Shannon CarbonHot Topic Comment"I moved here 30+ years ago and realized that I, with my wife and 2 children, increased the demands on the Island’s infrastructure. Of that I am aware and of which I am ashamed. I ran the Visiting Nurse Service and my wife taught in the public school system. When my two children graduated from MVRHS, they went off to college and never returned. I’d like to think that we made a contribution that exceeds our burden." — Christopher Knowles comments on our story of 60 units of housing proposed in EdgartownHot Topic Letter"The family of Tad Crawford wish to sincerely thank Sandie Core-Dolby and Horizons Geriatrics, Cheryl Kram and the Martha’s Vineyard branch of VNA Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, and Tad’s part-time caregiver over the past two years, Peter Fernandes, for the loving and considerate care they offered to Tad during the end of his life. You will be forever in our hearts." — The Crawford family writes to us with thanks for help on taking care of Tad Crawford

See the new musical "Billy Baloo," written by late Vineyard singer-songwriter Mike Mason, at the Martha's Vineyard Playhouse. Claim a ticket to Solderville, set in the Colorado Rockies in 1879, where three prospectors-turned-miners will greet you with a song about the importance of rocks. Then, meet Ada, who is returning to Solderville to reopen the Perfection General Store. To move her supplies up the mountain, Ada enlists the drifter Billy Balloo. However, Balloo's solution starts a chain of events that end up threatening Solderville's character and
future. Read more here.
