Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
The Island’s workforce is always a hot topic. Today we report a police chief looking forward to retirement, and a vet who comes all the way from Connecticut to ease an animal health care shortage. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

‘Professionalism and leadership’
After over six years leading the Edgartown Police Department, Chief Bruce McNamee plans to retire. After many years in uniform, from the Navy to different police departments, McNamee can now look forward to the next chapter of his life. Speaking with the Times, McNamee reflected on his time with the down-Island police department. Read more here.
No listeria outbreak here
No bad news to report on the Island. The hospital has reported that they have not treated anyone for disease related to listeria but that hasn’t stopped Stop & Shop from removing many Boars Head meats from its shelves. Read the latest on the national outbreak here.
A Connecticut vet
We reported recently on the shortage of Island veterinarians for big animals and an effort to provide housing to someone willing to come to the Island. Today, we hear from a Connecticut resident that has traveled to the Island every few months to provide services to horses and other farm animals. She has a pretty big clientele. Read that story here.
MEETINGS

The West Tisbury select board meets tomorrow at 4:30 pm.

The MVTimes: Our reporting makes a difference
Journalism that matters, where you need it, when you need it. Want more?
Quote of the Day
"We had demonstrations for racial justice in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, we had a historic flooding event that washed out a dam, and we had to evacuate 10,000 people in the middle of the night in the middle of a pandemic. I survived 28 recall attempts. … and a plot to kidnap and kill me. And so people ask the logical question, which is why do you want to keep doing this?"
—Governor Gretchen Whitmer during her book talk on the Island

Hot Topic Comment
"I have never seen a significant protest against a musician or other entertainer in response to a performance for US troops. The civilian deaths during the active (more active?) war on terror were significant. The US has a volunteer army, Israel has mandatory military service, however, in neither country should these potentially vulnerable individuals be demonized. These soldiers both American and Israeli are not the people waging war. I would begrudge either some entertainment and support."
—Elaine Weintraub comments on our coverage about a demonstration outside a Jewish festival

Hot Topic Letter
"There is no comparison … with the oil well blowouts or nuclear plant failures we have seen around the world. Turbines are mechanical, clean-up-able, even renewable and they will supply us with relatively clean energy for a long time. Let’s get over the surprise, clean up the mess, learn from the mistakes, and get on with building this part of our future."
—Chris Murphy says wind energy is the future, despite a recent broken blade

Today: Looking for some excellent live music tonight? Edgartown library hosts Sounds Like Summer with Jeremy Berlin’s trio with vocalist Theresa Thomason. I haven’t heard Theresa, but I have heard Jeremy, so I can only imagine the two together must be amazing. (Indoors if it’s rainy.) 6:30 pm. –Connie Berry

The Playhouse gives us live theater and we love it. Tonight, it’s "Miss Maybelline’s Nocturnal Flights of Fancy." A centenarian and lifelong O.B. resident forges a friendship and shares her life story. 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Meet Lydia the Farmer at a special storytime series at the Farmers Market at the Ag Hall. Listen to fun stories, connect with members of the community, and learn something new. For kids of all ages. 10:30 am. –C.B.
